Content Warning: The following article contains spoilers for the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
The first season of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, which introduced fan-favorite characters like Frodo Baggins, Gandalf the Grey, and, of course, Samwise Gamgee.
Sam is a well-loved character who’s known for his loyalty to his best friend Frodo, as he sticks by his side throughout his journey to Mordor. Along the way, Sam says some unforgettable lines that accurately capture his personality and prominent traits.
“It’ll Be The Farthest Away From Home I’ve Ever Been.”
Early during their journey, Frodo and Sam have to leave the Shire to meet Gandalf at the Prancing Pony. Sam suddenly stops just as they’re about to cross over the border that separates the Shire from the outside world, which prompts Sam to remark about how “this is it,” if he takes “one more step,” he’ll “be the farthest away from home” he’s “ever been.”
It’s a sweet sentiment that already hints at why Sam is among the best characters in LotR, as despite not sharing the same desire for adventure as Frodo, he willingly goes outside of his comfort zone for him. It’s a step that requires bravery and determination, both of which Sam will repeatedly show he has.
“Mr. Frodo’s Not Going Anywhere Without Me!”
Before the Council of Elrond could conclude, a humorous moment shows Sam jumping out from his hiding place to insist that Frodo won’t be “going anywhere without” him. He was likely spying on them the whole time to learn what Frodo’s role would be.
The heartwarming assertion is typical of Sam, who is always concerned with doing what’s best for Frodo. If protecting him means having to go with him to Mount Doom, it’s not an issue for Sam who doesn’t waste a single second letting everyone know he’ll be coming, too.
“I Made A Promise, Mr. Frodo.”
In a moving moment that shows Sam’s perseverance and fearlessness, he walks into a river knowing he will likely drown just to follow Frodo. When Frodo thankfully saves him, he tearfully reminds the protagonist that he “made a promise” to Gandalf not to “leave him,” and he doesn’t “mean to.”
It’s an underrated scene that may cause viewers to shed some tears, as Sam’s bold action and touching quote proves just how far he will go to keep his promise. He’s not about to take no for an answer, as he understands that Frodo needs him by his side (even if the Ring-bearer may not know it).
“Of Course You Are. And I’m Coming With You.”
No matter what terrifying forces and uncertain events they face, Sam’s loyalty to Frodo never wavers. Even when Frodo insists on “going to Mordor alone,” Sam responds with a witty line about how “of course” he is, and Sam will be going with him.
Even if he could have potentially drowned doing what he did, Sam is steadfast in his mission to stay with Frodo at all times. He’s set on staying true to his promise to Gandalf and is a faithful friend to Frodo, even if the protagonist rejects his more than once.
“That’s Just Morbid Thinking, That Is.”
When Frodo suddenly stops and stares in one scene, Sam immediately notices and asks him what’s wrong. Frodo its that he has “a feeling” he won’t “be coming back.” Though clearly bothered, Sam firmly says that he will, and that he’s “going there and back again” like Bilbo.
The exchange underscores another crucial trait Sam has that helps Frodo throughout their arduous trek to Mordor. Sam is always there to and encourage his best friend, even during the darkest times. He doesn’t lose hope, which inspires Frodo to keep going.
“I Thought Maybe If We Was Havin’ A Roast Chicken One Night.”
A silly conversation ensues when Sam frantically asks Frodo to catch something that fell from his bag while they’re using a rope to reach the foggy floor. Sam reveals that it’s “a bit of seasoning,” “the best salt in all the Shire” that they could use for “roast chicken.”
Though seemingly illogical, it sums up an endearing part of Sam, who manages to stay optimistic and find the good in the most unlikely of places. Small reminders of home keep him, and, in turn, Frodo motivated to complete their quest and return to the peaceful Shire.
“It's Only A ing Thing, This Shadow.”
During one of his profound and unforgettable speeches, Sam compares his time with Frodo to “the great stories,” all of which are “full of darkness and danger.” One thing is always the same, though, the “shadow” they all have is “only a ing thing,” which is the case for the darkness and hardship the two of them are experiencing, too.
Sam’s character is known for these poetic lines, as he has a way with words that reframe whatever challenging situation they’re in. It’s also a testament to how well-written his character is, as the trilogy wouldn’t be the same without Sam’s wise and expressive quotes.
“Do You The Taste Of Strawberries?”
Right when they’re so close to the heart of Mount Doom, Frodo can’t go any further and Sam is obviously in distress, too. He chooses that time to ask Frodo if he re the Shire, and notes that “it’ll be spring soon,” which is when they’d be “eating the first of the strawberries with cream.” He wills Frodo to “ the taste of strawberries” unsuccessfully.
The touching lines point out how Sam uses memories of his home to carry on with the difficult task. It also highlights how much he loves the Shire and all the simple pleasures they used to enjoy. The lovely location is a stark contrast to where they are, after all.
“There’s Some Good In This World, Mr. Frodo.”
All hope seems lost after Sam and Frodo are brought to Gondor, which threatens to end their already-challenging mission to get to Mordor. A distraught Frodo is once again comforted by Sam, who reminds him that “there’s some good in this world” and that “when the sun shines, it will shine out the clearer.”
It’s one of the most iconic quotes from LotR that also happens to capture Sam’s enduring optimism and continued hope that things will turn out okay. It’s definitely not an easy feat to hold on to positivity like that when everything around them seems to be getting worse.
“I Can’t Carry It For You, But I Can Carry You!”
Of course, Sam’s legendary line is one that every fan will be familiar with. When they’re almost at the finish line, Frodo collapses and can’t take another step, as the weight of the Ring and Sauron’s power are too much for him. Sam decides to pick him up, using what strength he has left to take him up to the entrance since he “can’t carry” the Ring.
The hair-raising line and incredible scene are a testament to Sam’s dedication, fearlessness, and loyalty. Frodo would have never made it without him, as Sam even fights off Gollum to give the protagonist time to get away.
