The chances are that if someone loves Gandalf. It goes without saying that Gandalf is a certified badass, having stood against time, Sauron, and a Balrog, and yet, despite him being epic, there are certain things that don't make sense about Gandalf.
A wizard is never late, nor is he early, but can a wizard such as Gandalf actually die? And how did he make certain decisions or friendships? These are a few of ten things that make no sense about Gandalf.
Friendships
Now, when your someone like Gandalf the Grey, usually, you thrive in the fantasy world you live in, going from place to place, exploring the land, fighting evil, and maybe making a few friends. However, at moments, there are moments where it seems like Gandalf has too many friends.
Everywhere he goes, there's someone who knows him intimately. From fellow wizards to beautiful elves, Gandalf almost has too many friends and acquaintances than humanly possible, scratching some heads and leaving some unanswered questions.
Why Bilbo
In an Bilbo Baggins.
Besides needing a place to meet with the dwarves in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Gandalf is mysterious about his reasoning for choosing Bilbo to him and the dwarves on their perilous journey, something that still leaves fans stumped.
That One Ring
The object that is constantly under a watchful eye is the one ring, the ring to rule them all. Its power is unmatched, meant for the dark lord to wield and has corrupted many souls over the years while remaining in the possession of Bilbo Baggins, Gandalf's best friend.
It's strange that Gandalf does not know of Bilbo's possession of the one ring despite having been great friends with Baggins for years, somehow never knowing about the one ring resting in Bags End until the last time he sees him.
Power Set
Powerful characters are commonplace in movies, heroes, and villains alike who can make the very earth tremble by simply just walking but sometimes, the power of these characters is left mostly in the dark, with barely any answers to how they received said powers or their extent.
As it is, no one really knows the real extent of Gandalf's power or what exactly he can do as either the grey or the white. Each form brings about a new form of power that many love even without fully understanding it.
Didn’t know about Sauron and Saruman
It's strange in films when the audience is introduced to smart, intelligent characters that seem to know just about everything, and yet, they still somehow manage to miss something. For Gandalf, a powerful wizard, one would expect him to recognize and know about the Sauron working with Saruman, if only because of the name.
Yet, when Saruman betrays Gandalf, he's taken off guard, begging the question of, out of everything Gandalf knew, he didn't know that the lord of darkness was working with one of Middle Earths' most powerful wizards.
Knew about Gollum
Sometimes, there are ways that certain characters are introduced or shown, either through flashbacks, stories or just popping up on the screen. A lot of the time though, these are new characters, people who haven't been seen before, and yet, somehow, someone knows them.
Even though it's never confirmed that Gandalf has ever met Gollum, he makes it sounds like he does while detailing the former Hobbits story to Frodo, making many viewers suspicious as to how Gandalf knows about Gollum, whether it's via story or experience.
Death?
Any kind of media–film or tv show– tends to push the rules of death. Death is typically either long term or short term in films, with most characters cheating death more times than most can count. For someone like Gandalf, besting death is like crossing the street.
Yet, the film never really explains how he managed to cheat death. Audiences are shown Gandalfs death and return, but there's no specific explanation for how he returned from the dead, a strange mystery that will remain unsolved.
Grey To White
What makes Gandalf so cool isn't the fact that he's stood up to the Lord of Darkness himself, but more that he's beat death. When everyone thought he was lost in the pit while battling the Balrog, Gandalf became Gandalf the White.
This change though is somewhat confusing. While he is still Gandalf beneath the white robes and hair, there are multiple questions as to who he has become, why the White is so different, and even a need for a more in-depth explanation for how he became the white.
The Eagles
Just about every LOTR fan agrees that the eagles are one of the most convenient plot devices of all time. Anytime the heroes are in danger or need a ride, the eagles magically appear when Gandalf calls to offer their aid and could very possibly give one a ride to Mordor and spare you the long journey.
With that in mind, the eagles raise many questions, usually about their relationship with Gandalf. It's never fully explained as to how they one another, leaving room for plenty of theories.
Deus Ex Gandalfia?
Every movie has a pinnacle moment where the heroes are in a moment of peril and then, out of nowhere, a Deus Ex Machina appears and is able to turn the tide for our heroes. Gandalf is probably one of the biggest Deus Ex Machinas out there.
Somehow, whether it be because of his wizard powers or just his punctual timing, Gandalf is always able to swoop in and save the day right when the plot demands it with no explanation or rhyme and reason.
