What LOTR: War Of The Rohirrim's Digital Release Means For The Movie
It Ends A Disappointing Box Office Run
With Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim coming to digital platforms on December 27, this will essentially spell an end to its disappointing box office run. The animated movie was released in theaters in the United States on December 13 and made only $4.6 million domestically during its opening weekend, the lowest by far for a Lord of the Rings movie. It also suffered the franchise's worst second-weekend drop with 72.1%, lower than The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug's 57.2%.

Lord Of The Rings: War Of The Rohirrim - Everything You Need To Know
Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim brings Middle-earth into the realm of anime. Here's everything to know about the animated epic.
War of the Rohirrim likely suffered because it's an animated movie and doesn't carry the broader appeal of live-action. The War of the Rohirrim's reviews were also mixed, praising its plentiful spectacle, but panning its formulaic characters and inconsistent animation, which make for a middling movie more than a true Middle-earth experience. Needless to say, War of the Rohirrim is a far cry from Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy, which was a massive critical and commercial success.
Our Take On LOTR: War Of The Rohirrim's Digital Release
Can It Redeem Its Disappointing Box Office Run?
By releasing on digital platforms, War of the Rohirrim has a chance to redeem its disappointing box office run. However, it's releasing at home during a busy holiday season while people may still be watching Christmas movies or catching up on more popular new releases, such as Gladiator 2 on digital platforms on December 24, or A Complete Unknown and Nosferatu in theaters on Christmas Day. By releasing during this crowded time, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim may be overlooked on digital platforms, just as it was in theaters.
