It’s safe to say that J.J. Abrams got in a little over his head eventually, leaving us with a lot of unanswered questions by the time of the show's conclusion. We’ve put ten of the biggest questions into this helpful list.

Why Is The Island There In The First Place?

The Island in Lost

In the later seasons of Lost, we learn a lot about The Island and its history. We know it has been around for thousands of years, and the actual island is magical. However, what we never found out is why is the island there? Why is it magical? Why does it have this strange ability to hide away in little pockets of time?

Why Did People Care About The Island?

Another thing we didn’t really learn is the reason behind the Island’s strange ability to make people care for it. You can look back to the Roman era and how the Man In Black’s mother was its caretaker or all the way forward to when Jack took over.

What was it about the Island that makes people want to look after it? Surely, if they just ed it was a weird little island, just ignore it and give up. But these people wanted to be its caretaker.

What Happened To The Island Afterward?

lost finale

We saw Jack’s death (and then appearance in that church—purgatory?) and know that Hurley took over as the protector of the Island afterward. What we don’t know, is how this went.

Did Hurley manage to fix all of the Island’s many flaws? Did it stop being so aggressive? Or was there just more time travel-based drama going on even during his tenure?

How Was A Cork Holding Together An Island?

On Lost, what was the point of the Cork in the Heart of the Island

One of the worst things the show ever did was give a physical reason behind all of the weird stuff the Island was doing. Rather than just leaving the strangeness to creepy, unexplained magic, they decided to literally put a cork in it that could be used to empty the Heart Of The Island.

How was a cork able to hold back such immensely powerful electromagnetic energy and become capable of destroying the Earth if improperly handled?

Why Was There A Horse On The Island?

On Lost, what was the deal with Kate's Horse.

As we were learning about Kate’s backstory, a mysterious horse became quite a big part of it. That very same horse appeared on The Island as well, meaning some sort of dramatic twist and the exciting reveal was just around the corner, right?

Well, no. The horse never appeared again, and we never got an explanation about why it was there.

What Was The Thing With Pregnancy?

Claire is sitting on the beach while pregnant on Lost

One of the most interesting plotlines in the show came when Claire was pregnant, captured by The Others, and given a series of scary tests she couldn’t really . Apparently, pregnant women were at a high risk of death.

Why? We never found out, because there wasn’t enough time for any more pregnancy talk as the show went crazy in its later seasons.

And The Thing With Walt?

We had to lose the character of Walt quite early on in Lost simply because the actor who played him aged way faster than the show progressed.

However, a major part of his character was that he was "special." He could see things others couldn’t. Why? Again, we never found out, and it was never mentioned again after he left the show.

And The Thing With Ben’s Childhood Friend?

During an episode that showed Ben’s early life on the Island, we met his friend Annie. She gave him a doll which he kept until his adult life, suggesting that she was pretty important, but the fact that she was nowhere to be seen was interesting.

We never saw her again after that episode, though. We have no idea why she never showed up again; she could have added a potentially interesting dynamic.

And Why Did We Never Get An Explanation About Libby?

On Lost, why was Libby in Hurleys mental institution.

Lost was known for throwing in breath-taking twists whenever they wanted to. With a canvas as open and crazy as the Island, they really could do whatever they want.

One of the most jaw-dropping twists was that Libby (Hurley’s ex-girlfriend who Michael killed) was actually in the same mental hospital as him in the real world. However, there was no explanation for this, making the dramatic reveal mean absolutely nothing.

Finally, Of Course, What Did The Numbers Mean?

On Lost, why were the numbers seemingly cursed for no reason.

The question on everybody’s lips from the very start of the show was ‘what do the numbers mean?. They followed us throughout everything, and we were all expecting to hear about them in that final episode.

Instead, they weren’t mentioned at all. They were just there doing nothing for no reason.
