Rings of Power Season 2 Set Photos Reveal Possible Silmarillion Reference

Warning: SPOILERS ahead for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2A new set photo from The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2 has spoiled the result of a major season 1 cliffhanger. In season 1, episode 7, Isildur was seemingly crushed by a burning house following Mount Doom's eruption in the Southlands. His father Elendil grieves over the apparent loss of his son while allowing Isildur's horse to gallop away.

Now, a new set photo from Redanian Intelligence (via Fellowship of the Fans) reveals that Isildur is alive in The Rings of Power season 2.

The photo reveals Isildur is slightly injured, likely from being trapped underneath the burning house. He is also accompanied by a mysterious new character portrayed by actor Nia Towle.

Why Isildur's Return To The Rings Of Power Isn't Surprising

Isildur in The Rings of Power and in The Lord of the Rings

Isildur being alive is no surprise to those familiar with The Lord of the Rings. Isildur is destined to become the person who defeats Sauron, fighting alongside the Last Alliance of Elves and Men against the Dark Lord's forces in Mordor. He will also refuse to destroy the One Ring, setting the events of Frodo's journey in The Lord of the Rings into motion.

With Isildur now confirmed to be alive, it's unclear where his journey will go in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2. Since he's being accompanied by Towle's unknown character, it's likely she will have a major part to play in his story moving forward. She may be a lost Southlander that accompanies him on his escape from Mordor and his journey back to Númenor.

There's also the possibility that Towle is playing Isildur's future wife, who goes unnamed in J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth writings. If so, then Isildur's story in season 2 could be setup for his faraway decision to keep the One Ring for himself. If Isildur's journey during The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2 is setting up a relationship between him and Towle's character, it could add an extra layer of emotion to his destined greed for the One Ring.
