Rings Of Power Season 2 Will Be More Canonical, Says LOTR Showrunners

WARNING: Major spoilers for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 1 finale below.Following the season 1 finale, Sauron actor Charlie Vickers discusses what's next for the villainous character in Tolkien's Lord of the Rings universe made its way back to the screen, only this time as a television series on Amazon Prime. Set during the Second Age, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 1 explored the early days of the franchise, primarily through Galadriel's eyes.

One of the big promises in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 1 was the reveal of Lord Sauron, who serves as the primary antagonist of the series. Throughout the season, the fantasy series would drop a few clues as to which character was actually Sauron. In The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power episode 8, "Alloyed," the Amazon Prime drama confirmed that Vickers' Halbrand was the iconic baddie, as he had fooled Galadriel this entire time.

While Sauron got away, the journey has only just begun as his terror will continue in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2. In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Vickers chatted about the fallout of Halbrand actually being Sauron and the next steps in his master plan. According to the 29-year-old star, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2 will explore Sauron in his "repentance stage," regardless if it's genuine or not. While the showrunners have yet to disclose the full details to Vickers, he's excited to see how The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2 will potentially have Sauron take on a new form, sharing the following:

"Definitely. We know Sauron takes on different shapes in this era. All I can say is maybe to that. Maybe we're going to do those things. But I'm incredibly excited to explore him doing these things that we know he does. He has a sh-tload of rings to make, and he gets to go to Númenor, and he orchestrates the downfall of Númenor. Then he has to take another form and go and fight in the Battle of the Last Alliance. The battle at the end of the Second Age.

[But] the showrunners have a really specific plan, and I don't know their plans as to how it'll unfold, but I loved playing him in this repentance stage. Whether the repentance is genuine or not is open to interpretation. But I think it's going to be really cool now that he's kind of out there. And it's like, I'm back. I've been lingering. I've been coming back very slowly. And now, thanks to Galadriel, I'm back. And I'm excited to play that."

What To Expect From Sauron In The Rings of Power Season 2

Sauron over Mount Doom in Rings of Power Finale

The end of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 1 finale was fairly ambiguous when it came to the last shot of Sauron. The last couple of seconds see Sauron getting back to Mordor, now ruling as its king, with the larger goal of ruling all of Middle-earth. One expectation from Sauron is other characters still dealing with Halbrand's betrayal, which is why the three elven Rings of Power were forged. With Vickers' character out of the shadows, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2 will definitely see the supervillain beginning to extend his forces, knowing that Galadriel is coming for Sauron.

While The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2 started filming very recently, it will likely be quite some time before the creative team and Amazon Prime gives any specific clues to Sauron's storyline. However, since the creative team has already mapped out their 5-season plan for the Amazon TV series, things are at least already in place for Sauron's entire arc as they go forward in the show. Since this is the first time any live-action Lord of the Rings property has explored Sauron in-depth, it will be intriguing to see what extent they will go with the vicious foe. Hopefully, despite the wait for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2 to release being potentially a long one, more details about Sauron's next chapter will come out sooner rather than later.
