Deepti Vempati is opening up about how the way her former finacé Abhishek “Shake” Chatterjee talked about her made her feel, and it wasn't great. Deepti and Shake met on Love Is Blind Season 2, and it seemed right away Shake didn't sit well with viewers. He claimed he was there to find his soulmate, but all his questions for his dates were about trying to figure out what they looked like, physically, which is the total opposite of how the experiment is meant to work. Shake made quite the impression on Deepti when on seemingly their first conversation, he tried to explain that he only liked women he could "lift" onto his shoulders at a concert, which led many viewers to assume he was looking for a slim, small woman. Despite this bad first impression, they did seem to find commonality in their cultural background, and in the end, Deepti accepted his proposal.
The couple met in person and initially, everything seemed great. Shake was raving about how beautiful she looked, how he couldn't wait to start a life with her and even make children. Unfortunately, this level of energy and commitment didn't last long. Shake began talking behind Deepti's back to seemingly everyone from the cast to crew, even to his own parents, about how while he knew Deepti was pretty, he didn't have a natural attraction to Deepti and they were seemingly the only couple who hadn't had sex before their wedding day. This line of conversation continued all the way to their wedding day when Shake told his groomsman once again how he didn't feel that urge. Fans assumed Deepti didn't know how Shake felt, but in a twist ending Deepti confidently rejected Shake at the altar.
With Love Is Blind Season 2 finally out, Deepti has been able to see what Shake was saying behind the scenes and she is not pleased. In an interview with Deepti opened up about how Shake's words made her feel. She said, "to watch it back and see how he did it — it was kind of like, 'Oh, look at me, I'm this cool dude that's just gonna talk shit about you too my friends.'" There were multiple times when Shake confided to the men on the season about his doubts. Only rather than come out earnestly, Shake made it seem like Deepti was beneath him in of attractiveness, "You don't talk about somebody who is your fiancé, let alone a best friend — or even just a real friend — that way." Deepti added that it was even hard to rewatch for her parents, who had been so gracious to Shake when they'd first met.
As a means of building intimacy, Deepti and Shake attended a massage date that Deepti said felt "forced". Ultimately the date gave her the clarity she needed that the two were not right for each other. Deepti continued on, "I had this epiphany that like, 'Why am I trying to prove to this person to see me? I'm done trying, I'm over this. I just need to move forward and figure out what I want — instead of trying to figure out why he doesn't want me, do I even want him?'" And so Deepti picked herself up, looked incredible as she walked down the altar, and with a smile on her face rejected Shake once and for all.
Deepti may not have found love on Love Is Blind, but she has found a community that s her. Her story of trying to change herself for a man, and then realizing she on her own is enough, is a devastatingly relatable one. It takes a lot of confidence and life experience to recognize that sometimes, the problem is not you, but the people you're with. With the Love Is Blind reunion episode just a week away, fans are wondering what words Shake will have for Deepti. And if his apology will be forgiven, or deservedly tossed aside.
Love Is Blind season 2 is now streaming on Netflix.
