Over the course of three seasons, CBS' hit reality dating show Love Island has seen its fair share of cast fall in love at first sight, only to have their romance fizzle out shortly thereafter. The major challenge the show is acting upon or resisting temptation as new enter the villa, forcing hard decisions that lead to ugly breakups and sudden changes of heart. As such, couples who endure the rocky first few weeks on the show tend to make it for the long haul.
As fans await word of a season 4 release date, now is a perfect time to highlight some of the Love Island romances that began hot but grew cold in short order. Indeed, some flamed out far faster than others.
Alexandra & Michael - Season 1
At the start of season 1 of the popular reality dating show, the male contestants got to choose their female partners upon entering the villa. Miami native Michael Yi chose Los Angelino Alexandra Stewart, who seemed smitten with her new partner. Alas, after a week or so of smooth sailing, a new man entered the villa and caught Alex's eye.
Once Cormac and Dylan entered the villa on day 4, it wasn't long before Alexandra completely abandoned Michael and went after her real romantic desire. While Alex and Dylan ultimately finished as runners-up, Michael was summarily dumped from the island after one week. A bit of a shame, as Michael and Alex probably would have explored their natural chemistry further had Dylan never entered the picture.
Caro & Cormac - Season 1
Caroline "Caro" Viehweg and Cormac Murphy seemed to have a really good thing going after America chose them to go on a date with each other in season 1. The two remained lovey and loyal over the next two recoupling ceremonies (each choosing the other once), showing intense dedication for the long term.
But after the Hearts on Fire game showed their heart rates spiking for different suitors, cracks in their kinship began to show. Trust issues began to develop, unhappiness spread, and soon Cormac found himself on the chopping block with Christen. All for the better, as Caro found Ray and finished in third place.
Alana & Yamen - Season 1
Upon entering the villa in season 1, 24-year-old amen Sanders chose 21-year-old Alana Morrison to be his romantic partner. After a good chunk of time getting to know each other, Alana chose to stay with Yamen in a subsequent recoupling. Their relationship seemed poised for a serious long-distance run toward the finish line.
Alas, trouble in paradise began to brew for Alana and Yamen when the men played a prank on the women by sending a fake text from Weston. The division was further exacerbated by the arrival of Christen, who stole the heart of Yamen and left Alana out in the cold. Of course, when Christen was voted off the island days later, Alana was already gone as well, leaving Yamen all alone.
Carrington & Kierstan - Season 2
Upon entering the villa on day 2 of season 2, 23-year-old Kierstan Saulter instantly chose 23-year-old Carrington Rodriguez to be her man. The two spent the next 17 days together as a happy pair, choosing to recouple with each other thrice in that time span. Everything was going so well until the dramatic Casa Amor incident.
Although Carrington and Kierstan decided to remain friends headed into the Casa Amor division, Kierstan had a severe change of heart in his absence and vowed to stay with him and forego the four new boys in the villa. Alas, in a major shock, Carrington dissed Kierstan by returning to the villa from Casa Amor with Laurel, in effect ending their romance for good.
Connor & Mackenzie - Season 2
As a compatible first-day couple who spent two long weeks together as a devoted romantic pair, 23-year-old Connor Trott and 24-year-old Mackenzie Dipman had a real shot at winning. Mackenzie was so distraught over the prospect of losing Connor that she would often express tearful concerns to her roommates.
Even after having a great date with Laurel, Connor remained faithful to Mackenzie and their bond strengthened. However, when both were made single in following the Casa Amor event, Mackenzie opted to be with Jalen instead in a shocking twist of fate that shook up the whole villa.
Jeremy & Trina - Season 3
Until he met Bailey Marshall, most of Jeremy Hershberg's romances in season 3 started strong and flamed out. However, none seemed more promising than his initial pairing with Trina Njoroge. They got hot and heavy from the jump and were the first in the villa to get physical (other than maybe Josh and Shannon).
However, once Trina wanted to really consummate their romance, Jeremy pulled back and the two began to differ on the long-term goals of their romance. Soon Jeremy left Trina to be with Aimee, a pairing that also had a torrid start that grew cold in the end.
Korey & Florita - Season 3
Somehow, the supremely likable Korey Gandy won season 3 despite having six different partners in the villa. And while Olivia was his winning match, one can't help but think about what could have been between Korey and Florita Diaz. Fans know that Florita was Korey's first real shot at love after failing to connect with Kyra and Trina.
Once Korey paired with Florita, real optimism for the resident friends-zoner to find love was felt by all. But then Jeremy swooped in, stole Florita's affection, and left Korey once again as an awkward third wheel. While their romance flamed out on the show, Korey and Florita rekindled their flirtation after the show by kissing on a nightclub dancefloor, indicating their intense mutual attraction.
Javonny & Olivia - Season 3
Javonny Vega and Olivia Kaiser had a really interesting relationship in season 3. After pairing up to start the series, the two realized they might be better off as friends. But over time, the two got to know each other more intimately and began a real heartfelt romance that seemed durable enough to go the distance. As such, the two willingly coupled up four times over the first three weeks of the show.
However, when Javonny became vulnerable during elimination, Olivia made no real heartfelt plea for the women to keep him around, indicating her width's end with their relationship. The two started out like gangbusters but became less compatible over time, opening the door for Olivia's winning run with Korey.
Cashay & Cinco - Season 3
When Cashay Proudfoot and Cinco Holland paired up on day 2 of season 3, their chemistry was palpably electric. Sharing the same age and cultural backgrounds, the two became extremely lovey-dovey over the next ten days, expressing gratitude for finding each other and being able to connect so quickly.
Unfortunately, Cinco's wandering eye and the duplicitous gamesmanship between the two led to a swift and ultra-dramatic breakup that had a lingering effect for the entire season. Cash and Cinco ultimately reconciled as friends but until they had to it their romance was not in the cards.
Cinco & Trina - Season 3
When Cinco made the hard decision to leave Cashay, it was to be with Trina. After making the decision, the two remained a strong pair from day 11 to day 25, including three deliberate recoupling ceremonies. Alas, Cinco could not get over his feelings for Cashay, leading to a toxic erosion of his bond with Trina over time.
In a difficult heart-to-heart confrontation, Trina forced Cinco into an ultimatum that did not end well for her. Paralyzed by his desire for two women, Cinco sabotaged his chances with both despite striking instant bonds.
