Thor is back with other familiar faces, but when is The MCU timeline was once a fairly straightforward thing, with most of the movies releasing around the same time that they were set. However, with the MCU Phase 4 and the advent of additional prequels and TV series that are more commonly set out of time that has become less the case.

The main timeline version of Thor (Chris Hemsworth) has not been seen since the events of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) and his appearance in Thor: Love and Thunder, Thor has clearly been traveling the galaxy with the Guardians for some time and has made some drastic changes to his lifestyle.

It’s never explicitly stated when Thor: Love and Thunder takes place in the movie, but some clues can help provide a window. Avengers: Endgame was five years later in spring of 2023, this would place Thor: Love and Thunder in 2027. Taika Waititi didn’t seem quite sure about his four-year figure and he was right not to: some points help to show that he was actually wrong.

Why Taika Waititi Was Wrong And When Thor: Love And Thunder Is Really Set

Thor Love and Thunder Natalie Portman Mighty Thor

In a key moment during Thor: Love and Thunder, Jane (Natalie Portman) and Thor are reunited and reference how long it has been since they broke up. While Jane suggests that it’s been “three, four years,” Thor has a more precise amount of time in mind: “eight years, seven months, and six days.” The discrepancy can be ed for by the fact that Jane was revealed to have been snapped for the five-year blip during Avengers: Endgame and Thor’s number can be trusted. Based on when Thor and Jane broke up, the place of Thor: Love and Thunder in the MCU timeline can be calculated.

During the party in Avengers: Age of Ultron, which is believed to be set around its release date of May 1, 2015, Thor and Jane are still together but Jane is absent as part of her work trips. During Jane broke up with him. Taking the movie release dates with Thor’s figure for the time that has ed, Thor: Love and Thunder must take place at some point between December 7, 2023, and June 9, 2026.

Taika Waititi’s timeline of Thor: Love and Thunder taking place four years after Avengers: Endgame has to be wrong as 2027 would be too far outside of this window. It’s hard to say more precisely where Thor: Love and Thunder falls in this window as the earlier end might make sense as Thor leaves to learn about the Infinity Stones at the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron, however, this would mean he had only been traveling with the Guardians of the Galaxy for about six months and his physical turnaround would seem unhealthy. While there’s no reference to the other ongoing MCU Phase 4 events in Thor: Love and Thunder, Spider-Man: No Way Home and Hawkeye were both set in 2024 and Moon Knight and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness were both set in 2025, so it seems unlikely that Thor’s adventures would massively predate those. Most likely Thor: Love and Thunder is set in 2025 or the first half of 2026, taking place just two or three years after Avengers: Endgame.
