The Lunar Remastered Collection, featuring two iconic JRPGs from the 1990s, is finally coming out in early 2025. The games take players on two journeys a thousand years apart to save the world from evil, alongside a cast of faithful adventuring companions. The series, best known for its stunning animation and well-written scripts, has been remastered with improved turn-based combat systems, high-definition pixel art, and a new English voiceover.

The Lunar series first began in the early 1990s with Lunar: The Silver Star, quickly becoming a best-selling success in the CD-ROM era of gaming. The games have received numerous sequels and remakes throughout the years, with the latest remaster bringing the JRPG series to a whole new generation of consoles. Taking place in a fantasy world called Lunar, both games follow a young man on a quest to save the world from an evil magical villain.

A Mid-Spring Release For The Classic JRPG Games

First announced in late 2024, Lunar Remastered Collection was revealed without a firm release date. Thankfully, in mid-January, publisher GungHo Online Entertainment finally confirmed the release date as April 18, 2025. The game is developed by Game Arts, the same studio behind the series since the very first game, which bodes well for the quality of the remaster for the current generation of modern consoles and PCs.

The first game in the series came out in 1992, titled Lunar: The Silver Star.

Lunar Remastered Collection will be available on all major console platforms, including PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC through Steam. The JRPG collection will also be compatible with the PlayStation 5 and Xbox X/S, though only the older consoles will have a physical edition available.

An Exclusive Physical Edition Can Only Be Found On Amazon

Lunar Remastered Collection will feature both a digital and physical version for fans to purchase. The digital version of the collection will be $49.99 USD and will be available on all platforms. The physical release will only be available through Amazon on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch for $54.99 USD. The physical version of Lunar Remastered Collection also has exclusive reversible cover art for both games by Toshiyuki Kubooka, the original illustrator and artist of the Lunar series.

Unfortunately, there are no other digital or physical preorders rewards for Lunar Remastered Collection, so the only extra content players can purchase is the reversible cover art on the Amazon exclusive edition. While it makes sense that there wouldn’t be any digital preorder bonuses, it is disappointing that the series, so well known for its stunning art, won’t include any preorder collectibles like an artbook or set of postcard prints. Surprisingly, there aren’t even any Japanese exclusives for one of the most influential fantasy JRPGs of the 1990s.

Explore A Magical World With Turn-Based Combat

Both games in Lunar Remastered Collection will follow the same plot as the originals. The first game, Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete, was itself originally a PlayStation 1 remake of an earlier game titled Lunar: The Silver Star. The 2025 remaster will bring the same plot to a new generation of consoles.

Players take on the role of Alex, a young boy who sets off on a quest after he is given the title of “Dragonmaster” by an older dragon. Alex must work together with his friends, each of whom has unique skills and attributes for combat, to defeat the Magic Emperor before he’s able to achieve world domination. Players will explore a magical world filled with towns, temples, and strange enemies around every corner.

The second game, Lunar: Eternal Blue, takes place one thousand years after the first game, and like Silver Star, follows a young man on a quest to save the world from a magical evil. Eternal Blue follows Hiro and his friends as they search for the Goddess Althena, who appeared in Silver Star, alongside a strange girl named Lucia, who is unfamiliar with humanity but learns to love it. Eternal Blue culminates in a mission to stop the God of Destruction from achieving his long-held goals, so both games feature high stakes.

Like the originals, Lunar Remastered Collection will feature turn-based combat for its gameplay, with beautifully animated scenes interspersed throughout the game. In the standard fashion of classic RPGs of the era, the Lunar games utilize the player’s party in combat, as each character and enemy has a speed rating that greatly impacts battles. Players must command their party throughout the battle using their own strategy, which could mean fleeing the battle entirely.

What’s New In Lunar Remastered Collection?

Enhanced Graphics, High Definition Animation, And Updated Combat System

For the remaster, both games have updated gameplay with different battle speeds and other quality-of-life changes to make the game easier for modern players. In addition to the updated gameplay experience, Lunar Remastered Collection is introducing an entirely new English voiceover and localization for the first time alongside the original Japanese to make the game more accessible to a wider audience. Other languages, like German and French, will only have subtitle options.

One of the most exciting features coming with Lunar Remastered Collection is the option to choose between a classic and remastered mode. The former version represents Lunar: The Silver Star and Lunar: Eternal Blue as they appeared on the PlayStation 1, while the latter maintains the core pixel art but expands to a widescreen perspective and adds some lighting effects.

Players won’t be able to swap between the two modes mid-game like in Halo: The Master Chief Collection, but the option still remains for players to relive a part of the 90s with the classic mode. With a thorough refresh that also delivers the iconic animated cutscenes in high quality, the modern option provided by Lunar Remastered Collection could be a definitive way to experience the games.
