The backstory of the titular protagonist in the Mad Max franchise is left pretty vague throughout the franchise, but here are his complete origins, including the history of his family and his revenge mission. Mad Max Rockatansky's story has been fleshed out across four mainline movies so far, with his motivations and reasoning for becoming the legendary Road Warrior constantly being questioned by audiences. So, here is everything that there is to know about Max's backstory throughout the franchise, and while some details are intentionally left vague, a pretty clear picture of the Mad Max lore can be pieced together.
Starting in 1979, George Miller's beloved Mad Max franchise has remained one of the biggest action movie series of all time, combining tense vehicle racing action with a unique post-apocalyptic environment. Throughout the four mainline films, the story of Max Rockatansky has been explored, with him being a law enforcement officer who went mad after the deaths of his family. Mel Gibson played Mad Max before being recast with Tom Hardy for the fourth film, Mad Max: Fury Road. Although his backstory isn't explored all that much, here is everything that we know about Mad Max Rockatansky.
Everything Known About Max Rockatansky's Backstory Before The Apocalypse
Here's Max's Origin Story
Very little is known about Max Rockatansky before the apocalypse, as the lore of the Mad Max franchise barely explores this period. In the timeline of Mad Max, society begins to collapse sometime before the events of the first film, although some semblance of law and order is upheld by the Main Force Patrol in rural Australia. However, World War III begins between the events of 1979's Mad Max and Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior, leading to the true apocalypse and the end of the final breaths of civilization.
At the beginning of the Mad Max franchise, Max Rockatansky is an officer for the MFP in Australia, with him working alongside a partner named Jim Goose. Max is one of the most celebrated officers in the MFP, with his commanding officer even attempting to force him to stay when he decides to leave the MFP later in the film. Max's time with the MFP has led to him becoming a local celebrity, with his wife pointing out that his police activities have gotten him on TV several times, with his actions against the roaming motorcycle gangs bringing him fame.
Although Max's MFP career is the main bulk of his pre-apocalypse lore, some other details are also known about him. Importantly, Max has a wife and child in the first film, with his wife being named Jessie and his young son being nicknamed Sprog. Max also has a massive interest in cars, with him and his MFP buddies working on several vehicles throughout the film, including his iconic V8 Interceptor.

Why The New Mad Max Movie Is About Furiosa, Not Mad Max
Furiosa: A Mad Max Story changes the protagonist of the sci-fi action series from Max to Furiosa, but there's a good reason behind this switch.
Jim Goose's Death Is The Beginning Of Max's Origin Story
Goose's Death Started It All
Max Rockatansky starts out the Mad Max franchise as a pretty well-adjusted cop, but the true start to his origin story is the death of his partner Jim Goose. Early in the film, Max manages to take down a fugitive known as The Nightrider, with Max taking him on an epic car chase before The Nightrider crashes his vehicle and dies. The death of the Nightrider causes the leader of his gang, known as Toecutter, to come into town in an attempt to get revenge. Before Toecutter can get his hands on Max, however, he finds his partner Jim Goose.
While Goose is at a bar, another outlaw named Johnny sabatoges Goose's bike, causing him to have a violent motorcycle accident. Later, Johnny throws something through Goose's car window, causing him to crash. Toecutter and Goose throw a match into the crashed car, with it catching on fire. Later, Max finds Goose's burnt body in a hospital, with him being alive but in bad shape. This event is what causes Max to attempt to run away with his wife and child, leading to the tragic events that turn Max into Mad Max.
Max's Wife & Son Dying Turned Him Into "Mad Max"
Their Deaths Broke Him
After the presumed death of Goose, Max, his wife, and his child go on the run, attempting to escape the wrath of Toecutter's gang. However, Toecutter eventually catches up with the Rockatansky's after stalking then throughout Australia. Eventually, Toecutter's gang runs Max's family over with their bikes, killing both of them instantly. Max's wife and child were the only things that truly made him happy, with their deaths at the hands of Toecutter being the true inciting incident of the Mad Max movie series.
Upon watching his wife and child be killed by Toecutter and his gang, something in Max breaks, with this being what truly turns him into "Mad" Max. After the deaths of these characters, Max is never the same, with his joy and comedic side never being seen in the franchise again. Max turns into a man haunted by sadness and the memories of his past, with him being a totally different person by the time Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior comes around. Although Max is developed throughout four films, he never goes back to who he was before.

Mad Max: Fury Road features a quote from the first of the "History Men," but who are these unseen characters and what is their role in the franchise?
Max's Revenge Mission & Purpose In The Mad Max Movies
Here's Why He Keeps Fighting After Toecutter
After the death of his family, Mad Max vows to get revenge on the Toecutter's gang, with him becoming determined to hunt down each member of the gang and kill them. Max first gets into a massive car chase with Toecutter, chasing him down the road until Toecutter dies in a head-on collision with another vehicle. Then, Max handcuffs Johnny's leg to a car, rigging a delayed explosion in an attempt to force Johnny to cut off his own foot. After Max gets revenge on the gang, he heads out into the wasteland, never returning home.
Mad Max continues fighting for good throughout the Mad Max franchise, but it is never because he simply wants to help people. Instead, people hear of the legendary Road Warrior and ask him to help, with him helping in exchange for things like gas. Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior shows the first time that Max took up his title as a hero, with him helping a group of survivors against Humungus' gang. Since then, Max has continued to act as a hero in the Wasteland, with the Mad Max story continuing next in Mad Max: The Wasteland.
