Dakota Johnson's Morbius, and Sony has plans to introduce many other characters to build a sprawling franchise that could rival the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The studio has viewed Madame Web as one of those characters ever since development on a solo movie began in 2019.
Although originally depicted as an older woman, Sony went in a different direction by casting Dakota Johnson as Madame Web. The former Fifty Shades franchise star will lead the solo Marvel movie that is being directed by Jessica Jones' S.J. Clarkson. Sony has not yet announced a release date for the movie, but Madame Web continues to make progress in 2022 as Sydney Sweeney has ed the cast in an unknown role. While there are no details about who she will play, the reports of her addition have provided additional insight into Sony's potential plans for Madame Web as a character.
In Deadline's report of Sweeney's Madame Web casting, the outlet shared an intriguing comparison for Johnson's Marvel superhero. According to insiders noted by the outlet, Madame Web is viewed as the Doctor Strange of Sony's Spider-Man Universe. The report indicates this is due to her psychic sensory powers. It has been reported before that Sony could alter Madame Web's character to make her better fit Dakota Johnson and their shared universe plans, and now it seems that Doctor Strange-level power and importance could be part of the movie.
The notion that Sony's own multiverse Spider-Man plans.
If Madame Web does ultimately become Sony's equivalent of Doctor Strange, it gives Johnson a potentially massive role in the Spider-Man universe's future. She could be the one responsible for bringing Tom Holland's Spider-Man to Sony's universe temporarily or even bridge the Venom-verse and The Amazing Spider-Man franchise. This doesn't guarantee that Madame Web will have magical powers like Strange, but the level of importance she plays could be similar to Strange's major MCU future. In that case, Madame Web could be a much more important installment of Sony's Spider-Man Universe than some expect.
