Magic: The Gathering will be having a special for its Final Fantasy crossover set at PAX East. Promotional material for the event promises that we'll be getting a look at some new cards, and I'm pretty sure I know at least one character who will show up. The event's special guest is a pretty big hint at what we'll see.

I've been eagerly following Magic's Final Fantasy set since its first card previews, and I'm excited to see what gets shown off at PAX. Aside from my one prediction, I'm not sure what else we might see. Final Fantasy is such a massive franchise, it's hard to know which characters and creatures are going to be included, and which will have to be left out. That said, I'm pretty sure one Final Fantasy protagonist is a shoo-in now.

FF16's Clive Is Likely Coming To Magic: The Gathering

Clive Actor Ben Starr Is Hosting The PAX

Magic: The Gathering's PAX will be hosted by actor Ben Starr, who announced his appearance on Clive's dog Torgal, but it's just a reskin of an existing Magic: The Gathering card, Yoshimaru, Ever Faithful.

I'm also interested to see how Clive's abilities translated into Magic: The Gathering mechanics. I could see Clive being able to gain the abilities of other cards on the battlefield, similar to how he absorbs Eikon power from Dominants. It'd also be cool to see Clive potentially as a dual-faced card, with his human side on the front and the back being one of the new Saga creatures for Ifrit. If Celes' Magic: The Gathering card is any indication, it could also be more of a thematic ability than a literal one.

What Else To Expect From Magic's PAX Event

One thing that took me a bit by surprise was the announcement that Magic: The Gathering's PAX East event will be featuring a few more guests that make far less sense than FF16's Ben Starr. Professional wrestlers Adam Cole and Kenny Omega both announced that they would be part of the event. While both have played or at least discussed Final Fantasy games on stream in the past, I still wasn't expecting them to turn up at an MTG .

Although we've seen a decent number of cards previewed already, I'm guessing we'll also get a fresh round of new Final Fantasy cards shown off at PAX East. I'm continuing to play my way through the games in the series that I haven't yet in anticipation, so I'm hoping I will be fully prepared to evaluate all the new PAX cards with the eye of a well-informed super fan by the time they get spoiled. I'm also just interested in seeing how our first full Standard legal Universes Beyond Magic: The Gathering set looks in of balance.
