Musical artist Post Malone has collaborated with rare $800,000 Magic: The Gathering card. Malone also helped developer Wizards of the Coast restore the trading card game's famous global play program Friday Night Magic after its COVID-19 pandemic-related suspension. Moreover, Malone has streamed himself playing Magic on Twitch and has guest-starred on several Magic-themed episodes of the YouTube gaming show Game Knights.
Magic: The Gathering's Secret Lair is a limited-time event that pairs fan-favorite cards with a special theme, often one that features an outside IP. The cards are reprinted with alternate art inspired by IPs ranging from video games to movies to musicians. Past collaborators with Magic: The Gathering include Fortnite, Dungeons & Dragons, and Warhammer. A recent Secret Lair crossover saw horror comic artist Junji Ito illustrate Magic: The Gathering cards in his signature nightmarish style. Ito re-imagined the four classic black cards Doomsday, Thoughtsieze, Carrion Feeder, and Plaguecrafter, which are available for only a limited time.
Wizards of the Coast has revealed that the next Magic: The Gathering Secret Lair crossover will be with American rapper Post Malone. The two Secret Lair drops, called Secret Lair X Post Malone: Backstage and Secret Lair X Post Malone: The Lands, are now available for pre-order until November 14. Malone not only designed the cards, but is also featured in the cards' art and flavor text. The Backstage set of cards consists of K’rrik, Son of Yawgmoth, Bolas’s Citadel, Jet Medallion, and Leshrac's Sigil, all re-imagined to feature Post Malone. The Lands set of cards contain handwritten notes and doodles from the rapper and even features his famous tattoos.
Secret Lair Strengthens Collaboration Between MTG And Malone
Even though most Secret Lair sets feature collaborations between MtG and properties like Assassin's Creed and Final Fantasy, the Post Malone-inspired cards are unique in how much of the artist's personality shines through the set. With Malone's handwritten notes saying things like "U are loved!" his notes can be seen as a personal message to both his fans and MTG players. Furthermore, the cards from the Backstage set were selected from the musical artist's own deck. Considering the amount of personality the rapper was able to put into the cards, it's clear that Wizards of the Coast is embracing its promotional deal with the popular musical artist.
Both Magic: The Gathering sets are available in nonfoil and special foil editions, but what really makes this set special is seeing Post's notes and doodles in the text session. As with other Secret Lairs, like July's MtG X Fortnite set, the Secret Lair X Post Malone: Backstage and Secret Lair X Post Malone: The Lands sets will be gone for good once the preordering window closes.
