In a recent post from the Secret Lair crossover with Post Malone, and is expected to receive a full announcement, possibly including a release date, on the teased date of December 5, 2022. MTG's Secret Lair Crossover With Transformers Draws (More) Player Backlash
Magic: The Gathering's recent teases, reveals and releases have been no stranger to crossover events with other franchises, with the most recent Secret Lair sets collaborating with both Post Malone and Junji Ito. Other collaborations have included franchises like Doctor Who, and, notably, an crossover will feature Assassin's Creed and Final Fantasy. However, while some players may enjoy the recent influx of new promotions, releases, and crossover events, others have taken issue with what can be seen as excessive monetization.
In replies to the tweet teasing the Transformers collaboration, some Magic: The Gathering players have taken to protesting the recent trend of rapid-fire releases and exorbitantly priced packs, with many replying with images of the Greed card. While the Transformers crossover is the most recent victim, the discontent seemingly stems from MTG's recent trajectory as a whole, with some also pointing out Transformers cards had already been done in the Brothers' War set. Additionally, the enormous price tag of Magic: The Gathering's celebratory 30th anniversary edition seems to be a major pain point for many players, in part kicking off many of the complaints.
While the newest Secret Lair reveal has drawn yet more criticism, it also marks the latest in a long line of teased releases, with further crossover events planned even as far as 2024. While new content in a game can be something to look forward to, an overly packed release schedule can also lead to players being unable to keep up, to say nothing of a potential drop in quality that may come with constant releases. For the Magic: The Gathering crossover with Transformers, however, it remains to be seen how the set will shape up.
