Warning! Spoilers ahead for X-Men: Inferno #3

In the latest issue of Marvel Comics' X-Men: Inferno, it's becoming apparent that Charles Xavier's days are numbered as the primary leaders of mutantkind. While they may be part of the larger governing body known as the Quiet Council on the island nation of Krakoa, Xavier and Magneto have long been shaping Krakoa from the shadows, working with Moira MacTaggert in secret to maintain their nation in ways the majority of mutants have never known. However, now that it's all at risk of falling apart it seems Magneto in particular can sense the shift that's about to happen.

In the X-Men's Inferno, it's been revealed that Magneto and Xavier have failed to prevent the resurrection of the one mutant Moira explicitly told them must never be brought back to life: Destiny, the precognitive wife of Mystique. While Moira has lived multiple lives, her current life is the one where she succeeds in brokering an alliance between Xavier and Magneto in order to create Krakoa and its resurrection protocols, allowing mutants to live in peace as the growing dominant race on Earth. However, it seems as though Destiny can see all of Moira's past lives, allowing her to see the true plans Moria has kept hidden from Xavier and Magneto.

Now, Inferno #3 from Jonathan Hickman, R. B. Silva, Stefano Caselli, and Valerio Schiti confirms Magneto and Xavier waited too long to prevent Destiny's resurrection, seeing as how Mystique managed to bring her back without them. Meeting together to discuss their next moves, Magneto expresses doubt for their future while Xavier maintains optimism that they'll be able to soon resume control. After all, thanks to Moira they seemingly know that they always win, unaware that Krakoa could very well burn after Destiny saw what MacTaggert has planned. As a result, it's very likely that Magneto and Xavier's position as Krakoa's "rulers" is nearing its end.

Considering the trap Magneto and Xavier find themselves in by the issue's end facing Nimrod (thanks to Destiny and Mystique), the end for the X-Men's leaders could be a lot worse than simply losing their positions of power. Furthermore, even if they do manage to survive it seems incredibly likely that Xavier and Magneto's secret operations with Moria will finally be exposed. Given all of the teases that Moira's true plans could end mutants rather than save them, Magneto and Xavier could likely be seen as guilty accomplices.

With one more issue of Inferno to go, the fate of Krakoa is in jeopardy as Destiny and Mystique have promised to burn it to the ground. However, that may just be what saves mutantkind if it prevents Moira's plans (whatever they may be). In any case, it seems a reckoning for Magneto and Xavier is at hand either way. Whatever their fates may be, it does seem certain that their time as the X-Men's leaders is over.
