The Equalizer 3 director Antoine Fuqua says he would be open to reuniting with Denzel Washington again for a surprise sequel to another film the pair were involved with. Fuqua has directed every movie in The Equalizer trilogy, while Washington has starred as Robert McCall in each entry. However, the action franchise isn't the only one the pair have collaborated on.
Speaking with releasing The Equalizer 3, he would be open to making a sequel to his 2016 remake of The Magnificent Seven, with Washington returning for the lead role. The director said that, if he made a sequel, he would want it to focus on Washington's character, Sam Chrisholm. Check out what Fuqua had to say below:
I think, Magnificent 7, I always wanted that character to have more of a story. I wanted, a bigger story, an arc with that character, you know? Very cool guy.
Could The Magnificent Seven 2 Happen?
The Magnificent Seven is a remake of the 1960 film of the same name, though it reimagines the classic story with different, original characters. The core leader of the Seven is Washington's Sam, who slowly gathers the rest of the team during the movie. At the end of The Magnificent Seven, Sam and the surviving of his group are able to push the corrupt Bogue (Peter Sarsgaard) out of Rose Creek.
A sequel to the Washington-led remake would no doubt have a very different focus, especially if Fuqua would explore Sam's character more independently. While it's possible a Magnificent Seven 2 could see Sam gather a new group to defend a new town, the premise may feel too repetitive compared to the original. Instead, a sequel could be centered around Sam alone, further developing his character beyond his leadership in the first movie.
However, the remake was not a massive box office hit, grossing just $162.4 million against a $90 million budget. Additionally, a reboot of The Magnificent Seven is in the works as a TV series for Prime Video. Both these factors diminish the possibility of a sequel to Fuqua's remake. Even so, it's clear Fuqua and Washington make a great team when it comes to action films, meaning The Equalizer 3 may not be the final time the pair collaborate.
