Who saved Grogu from Order 66 is one of Star Wars’ biggest unanswered questions, but whoever got Baby Yoda out of the Jedi Temple is probably dead in The Mandalorian season 3. At a time when Star Wars still relies a lot on iconic characters such as Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader, The Mandalorian proved that new Star Wars legends can still be created. Both Mando and Grogu achieved a level of popularity that can be compared to some of Star Wars' oldest characters, meaning that the backstories of Din Djarin and Grogu can make for interesting, engaging stories within the Star Wars universe.
Compared to Din Djarin's past, Grogu’s backstory remains very much a mystery. Both The Mandalorian and Return of the Jedi galaxy suggests that Grogu’s savior must already be dead.
The Mandalorian Still Hasn't Revealed Who Saved Grogu
Neither The Mandalorian nor The Book of Boba Fett has revealed who saved Grogu from Order 66 and how exactly the unique youngling managed to get out of the Jedi Temple. Considering how Star Wars has always played with mystery boxes, far before the sequel trilogy’s Snoke theories, it is safe to assume that Grogu’s savior has some importance to the story. If Grogu’s savior was not supposed to be an important character or at least a significant one, then there would be no reason for The Mandalorian to create such a mystery regarding their identity. As such, The Mandalorian might be setting up a reveal.
Why Grogu's Savior Is Probably Dead - All Evidence
Even if The Mandalorian season 3 or any of the “Mandoverse” shows reveal who got Grogu out of the Jedi Temple during Order 66, the mysterious characters will likely only appear through flashbacks. The first evidence that Grogu’s savior is dead is that they left Grogu to be protected by the Nikto mercenaries shown in The Mandalorian season 1. As such, it can be assumed that Grogu’s savior went off on another mission and could no longer protect Grogu themselves. Leaving a surviving youngling under the protection of mercenaries surely suggests that Grogu’s savior was desperate.
Another piece of evidence that Grogu’s mysterious savior is dead is that they never came back for Grogu. The little green child has caused a lot of trouble across the galaxy, and it has become a target for remaining Imperial forces like Moff Gideon. Grogu has also met with Luke Skywalker, one of the most famous people in the post-Return of the Jedi galaxy and the responsibility for rebuilding the Jedi Order. If Grogu’s savior is a Jedi or anyone who had any connections with the Jedi Order during the prequels, they could have easily tracked Grogu down – especially after Mando and Grogu’s adventures.
All of that considered, the biggest piece of evidence for Grogu’s savior to be dead is that they never ed the fight during the events of the original trilogy. For example, if Grogu’s savior was a Jedi, which is likely given that they were at the Jedi Temple and were able to escape a clone battalion, then they would have been of great help during the events of the original trilogy. However, apart from Obi-Wan Kenobi in A New Hope, no surviving Jedi or Force-sensitive ed the fight after the destruction of Alderaan, not even Ezra or Ahsoka, as far as Star Wars has revealed.
How The Mandalorian S3 Can Still Reveal Who Saved Grogu
Had it not been for Luke Skywalker, viewers would have never found out about what happened to Grogu on the night of Order 66. However, now that Grogu has chosen to be a Mandalorian and not a Jedi, it may be more difficult for the child to unlock past memories. Still, Grogu did spend some time training with Luke, meaning that the child might now be able to search his own memories without external help. Should that be the case, then The Mandalorian season 3 can still reveal who saved Grogu. For that to happen, Grogu would have to learn how to communicate with Mando – perhaps using the Force.
It is also possible that other Star Wars shows set between season 2 could reference Grogu and reveal the character who saved Baby Yoda from Order 66. That would be similar to how The Bad Batch season 1 gave Fennec Shand a backstory.
Perhaps the only way for Grogu’s savior to be alive during the events of The Mandalorian season 3 is if they are a villain – someone who had secret plans for Grogu and used Order 66 as a way to get to him. Another popular theory is that Barriss Offee, Luminara’s padawan who betrayed the Jedi and plotted against Ahsoka, saved Grogu for some reason. Grogu’s memories in The Book of Boba Fett fueled those theories, as the corridor in which Grogu is being attacked looks similar to the one where Barriss’ room was located. In fact, even the crest on one of the rooms was a reference to Barriss.
If Star Wars Rebels. Having Grogu’s savior return in The Mandalorian season 3 only for the show to reveal that they are evil would be an interesting twist, and it would further establish how Din Djarin is Grogu’s only family in the entire galaxy.
Grogu’s savior can lead to an interesting The Mandalorian season 3 storyline whether they are dead or alive. The most likely option is that whoever saved Grogu is already dead in the post-Return of the Jedi timeline, but that has never stopped Star Wars from adding more backstory to a character through flashbacks. Revealing who saved Grogu can create a better link between the Star Wars prequel trilogy and the current Mandoverse shows, and there are not many Star Wars characters who have lived through such a long period. It remains to be seen if The Mandalorian season 3 will finally answer the remaining Grogu mysteries.
