WARNING: The following contains spoilers for The Mandalorian.
The Mandalorian season 1 finale is a satisfying conclusion to Din Djarin's (Pedro Pascal) arc thus far, but it also leaves a lot of questions waiting to be answered come season 2. Here's the biggest unanswered mysteries from the first year of the Star Wars live-action show.
Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito) - a former Imperial governor who ordered the hunt and the primary antagonist of the series - personally going after him.
Season 1 of The Mandalorian ended with Din and Baby Yoda successfully escaping Moff Gideon and setting off to a brand new adventure. However, there are also several mysteries left unanswered which is presumably being saved for season 2.
Who was the guy at the end of episode 5?
Episode 5 of The Mandalorian titled "The Gunslinger" brought fans back to iconic Star Wars planet, Ming Na Wen). The episode went on a different turn after Fennec turned Toro against Din. Mando was able to get away from the planet unscathed, but the episode planted a plot mystery when it teased an unknown figured walking to Fennec's lifeless body left in the sand dunes.
The initial presumption was the unknown figure was Moff Gideon, but considering what we've seen from his character thus far, this theory is getting more and more farfetched. Meanwhile, there's speculation that it's Boba Fett due to the spurs sounds associated with the bounty hunter since The Empire Strikes Back. With no clear answer provided prior to its season 1 finale, it's safe to assume that it's a detail The Mandalorian will further explore come its second year.
What are Yoda's species?
When The Mandalorian decided to introduce a 50-year-old infant from the same species as Jedi Master Yoda, it effectively sets up further exploration of the enigmatic creatures. Thus far, the only thing we know about them is that they age very slowly - allowing the legendary Jedi to live until he's 900 in his death in Return of the Jedi. In the franchise's more than four decades of history, there are only two other sightings of the species before Baby Yoda - Yoda and Yaddle, although it's just the former that we spent a considerable amount of time with.
This originally worried long-time Star Wars enthusiasts considering creator George Lucas was vocal about wanting to keep them as mysterious as possible. Throughout its first eight episodes, we learned several things about the child, including the fact that it is strong with the Force. Not only was he able to use it in ways that we've seen other Jedi do before, it also exhibited an ability that had been typically overlooked which is Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Other than those, it remains a mystery.
Details regarding Baby Yoda and the species it belongs to were scarce in the first season of The Mandalorian, but if the show's finale is any indication, we might learn more about it come season 2. The Armorer (Emily Swallow) put things into perspective for Mando as she called the child a foundling, and until it's able to take care of itself or reunited with its own kind, Din is essentially its farther. With Mando and the child becoming a clan of two, season 1 ended with their bond stronger than ever, but it also sets Din on a new mission - locate where its species originated from, meaning we'll finally get to know a great deal about them.
How did Gideon get the Darksaber?
Arguably the biggest reveal from The Mandalorian finale which has direct implications for season 2 is the surprise reveal that TIE fighter, Mando and Baby Yoda boarded the Razer Crest leaving Greef Karga (Carl Weathers) and Cara Dune (Gina Carano) in Nevarro. But just as we thought that we'd seen the last of Gideon, the series revealed that not only did he survive the craft wreckage, he also wields the Darksaber. It's unclear how he's able to get a hold off such valuable weapon, but it's a clear set-up for a bigger role for him when the Star Wars live-action series returns next fall.
For those who are unaware, the Darksaber was first introduced in the people of Mandalore as it was the saber of the first ever Mandalorian Jedi, Tarre Vizla. Essentially, there's a belief that whoever has it becomes the rightful leader of Mandalore. It has changed hands multiple times over the years, at one point, it was even at the hands of Darth Maul. Its last known owner, however, is Bo Katan Kryze - the sister of Dutchess Satine, after Sabine Wren handed her the precious weapon in Rebels.
Gideon has only been in the final two episodes of The Mandalorian season 1, but the series has already established his connection with the Mandalorians. Din reveals that he worked as the Imperial Security Bureau officer during The Purge which explains why he knows Mando's name. However, between that and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story with the evil organization having a file called "black-saber"
Whether or not The Mandalorian season 2 will provide all the answers for these aforementioned queries remains to be seen. Nevertheless, with a solid debut year, fans are nothing but excited to find out what lies ahead for everyone involved in the series moving forward.
