Din Djarin, orphaned as a child and adopted by the people of Mandalore, whose way of life he has followed diligently ever since. When The Mandalorian season 1 begins, Djarin is the archetypal galactic mercenary with a fearsome reputation and a professional work ethic, but his journey takes a turn after picking up Baby Yoda, who Disney will stubbornly continue to call The Child.
Mando decides to forsake his path and act as Baby Yoda's protector, and 2019's most lovable pairing embark on a series of adventures, while the remnant forces of the Empire, led by Moff Gideon, continue to pursue them. The Mandalorian was a huge hit for Disney+, earning praise from all sectors of the Star Wars fandom, and even attracting mainstream attention thanks to a certain miniature Force-. As 2020 continues to prove a testing year, the promise of The Mandalorian's return offers a small, collective reprieve from reality.
The Mandalorian season 2 will introduce a host of new faces, from entirely fresh creations to beloved Star Wars protagonists, and as Din Djarin and Baby Yoda make their way across the galaxy, fans will be hoping answers to the many mysteries posed in season 1 are forthcoming. Here are all the biggest points The Mandalorian needs to address in season 2.
Where Did Baby Yoda Come From?
Everyone knows his face. Everyone knows his power. But no one knows his past. Despite his deceivingly youthful looks, The Phantom Menace and Return of the Jedi, and also reveal who was responsible for hiding the playful scamp on Arvala-7.
What Does Gideon Want With Baby Yoda?
The entire story of The Mandalorian begins when Giancarlo Esposito's Moff Gideon vies for custody of Baby Yoda, but exactly what nefarious purpose he has in mind remains to be seen. It's heavily implied that Gideon is trying to clone the little green imp - Dr. Pershing's coat bears the logo of Kamino, a planet renowned for its cloning facilities, and Lucasfilm's imaginatively-titled The Star Wars Book reveals how Imperials were in the business of cloning rare species. Still, this doesn't explain why Gideon is so desperate to clone The Rise of Skywalker, or the creation of Supreme Leader Snoke.
Instead of searching for Baby Yoda because the youngster will prove useful in rebuilding the Empire, perhaps Mando's stumpy sidekick has been picked out as a potential threat by Gideon. If The Child ultimately proves to be Yoda's child, the Empire would surely stop at nothing to wipe out the secret offspring of their greatest enemy. Similarly, if Yoda's species are all naturally aligned to the light side, the Jedi will never die so long as Baby Yoda is still munching frogs and sipping soup, giving the Empire extra motivation to catch him. Until Gideon reveals his actual intentions, however, nothing is certain.
Where Will Mando Take Baby Yoda?
The Mandalorian season 2's highly anticipated trailer revealed the show's core premise moving forward - Din Djarin must take Baby Yoda to his own people. Unfortunately, Baby Yoda's people are more well-hidden than Darth Vader's sense of humor. If Mando hopes to unite his pint-sized companion with his own species, the inherent secrecy of Yoda's race will come into play. Where is their home planet? How many of them exist? Are they already extinct? But the trailer for The Mandalorian season 2 suggests Djarin is seeking out the Jedi instead - other Force-sensitives that Baby Yoda might feel at home with. The Jedi were largely wiped out during Order 66, leaving only a handful alive in The Mandalorian's timeline. With Luke and Leia unlikely to appear and Ahsoka Tano already confirmed, Baby Yoda could fall under the care of Anakin Skywalker's Togruta apprentice, even though she technically is a Jedi no longer.
It's entirely possible that Djarin will learn Baby Yoda has no natural home, with none of his potential allies left alive. The duo might then discover that "family" is less about species or the Force, and more about the Clan of Two.
What Happened During The Mandalorian "Great Purge?"
One of the biggest mysteries from The Mandalorian season 1 is the Great Purge, referenced by the Armorer and Moff Gideon, among others. The Mandalorian only speaks of this ominous-sounding event in hushed tones, and has yet to reveal the full extent of the Purge. From the details revealed so far, viewers can glean that at some point during the original trilogy era, Mandalorian history in full.
How Did Gideon Obtain The Darksaber (& Who Ends Up With It)?
The Mandalorian season 1 ended in grandiose fashion, as Moff Gideon sliced his way free from an Outland TIE fighter (grounded courtesy of Din Djarin) and emerged from the wreckage holding aloft the Mandalorian Darksaber. A legendary weapon created by the very first Mandalorian Jedi, the Darksaber has long been a symbol of leadership among the people of Mandalore, and was last seen in the capable hands of Bo-Katan Kryze. Logic would suggest that the Darksaber was one of the Empire's spoils from the Great Purge. Gideon was certainly in the right place at the right time, and could've easily swiped the weapon once the Empire's grasp on Mandalore had been secured. The Darksaber usually changes hands by a trial of combat; flashbacks could once again prove useful, this time revealing whether Gideon earned the blade honorably or shamelessly stole it.
Due to the heralded status of the Darksaber among Mandalorians, the weapon could find a more worthy owner by the end of The Mandalorian season 2. Bo-Katan, Sabine Wren and Djarin himself are all possible contenders, but they'll likely have to pry the blade from Moff Gideon's cold, dead hands, and Giancarlo Esposito has confirmed a major lightsaber duel for his character in the episodes to come.
Who Found Fennec Shand On Tatooine?
The Mandalorian was born from the ashes of Disney's failed Boba Fett solo movie, so it's no surprise that fans were half-expecting the legend himself to appear in season 1. While the original Star Wars bounty hunter has been suspiciously absent from the show thus far (despite a few doppelgangers), "The Gunslinger" dropped a major Boba Fett tease when a pair of boots approached the defeated Fennec Shand. The sound of spurs (a nod to Boba's first movie appearance in The Empire Strikes Back) suggested the mercenary had escaped the Sarlacc pit and remained on Tatooine.
The Mandalorian season 2 has reportedly cast Temuera Morrison as Boba Fett and Timothy Olyphant as Cobb Vanth, and both characters could potentially be the mysterious figure seen striding up to Shand in season 1. Introduced by the Star Wars: Aftermath novels, Vanth is a Tatooine vigilante who obtains Boba Fett's armor, arguably making him the most likely companion for Ming-Na Wen's character in The Mandalorian season 2. With Morrison also slated to appear, however, the spur sounds might've indicated Boba himself, rather than an impersonator.
What Happened To Boba Fett After ROTJ?
After falling victim to the Sarlacc in Return of the Jedi, Boba Fett became a figure of myth. The old Star Wars EU quickly retconned Fett's death to reveal the bounty hunter had survived, but Disney canon has yet to address the matter if any meaningful way. If Temuera Morrison is playing Boba Fett, The Mandalorian season 2 will need to address his escape from the Sarlacc, regardless of whether he's the mystery man who chanced upon Fennec Shand in season 1. The death (or otherwise) of Boba Fett is one of the oldest unanswered Star Wars questions, and to bring the iconic bounty hunter back to the franchise without any explanation would risk feeling like a cop-out. After lifting the lid on Boba's survival, The Mandalorian must then redefine his role in the larger Star Wars story. The Boba Fett character could work as both an ally and an enemy to Din Djarin, or might simply decide to retire and take advantage of the anonymity his presumed demise affords.
Where Has Ahsoka Tano Been Since Star Wars Rebels?
Not strictly a question from The Mandalorian season 1, but a pre-existing Star Wars mystery nonetheless, and one that The Mandalorian will be expected to answer in its new season. Perhaps the most thrilling character addition to The Mandalorian season 2 is bantha in the room. Ahsoka spent a considerable amount of time in the Unknown Regions, very little of which has been charted in Star Wars canon. The Mandalorian season 2 could refresh this popular character for a new audience and solve one of the biggest mysteries from animated Star Wars lore.
