The Book of Boba Fett rather than The Mandalorian season 2. Despite the latter airing in 2020, the titular bounty hunter's story continued in The Book of Boba Fett thanks to the shared timeline of Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni's miniature Star Wars shared universe. With the trailer for The Mandalorian season 3 making it clear the show follows directly from these events, a recap of The Book of Boba Fett could be useful.

Whether for people who have not yet seen The Book of Boba Fett, or those who have simply forgotten the details of the show, a recap of the events pertaining to Din Djarin would not go amiss. The ending of The Mandalorian season 2 saw a team-up of characters from both season 1 and The Book of Boba Fett and ended with Luke Skywalker taking Din's foundling Grogu into his care for Jedi training. The final episode of The Mandalorian season 2 is what kickstarted the events of The Book of Boba Fett, which will subsequently tie heavily into The Mandalorian season 3 when it airs on Disney+ in March 2023.

The Mandalorian Searches For The Armorer

Din gives Beskar to the Armorer in The Mandalorian

The first appearance of Din Djarin in The Book of Boba Fett season 1, episode 5, aptly titled "Return of the Mandalorian". The episode picks up an unspecified amount of time after The Mandalorian's season 2 finale, with Din traveling to Glavis Ringworld in order to take out a bounty contract. The contract was issued to him by the Ishi Tib guild master in exchange for information on a Mandalorian covert, of the Death Watch in which Din was raised. Djarin completed the contract and followed the information given to him, reuniting with the Armorer and Paz Vizsla, two Mandalorians from the Nevarro covert of The Mandalorian season 1.

There, The Mandalorian learned of the history of the Darksaber, the weapon he acquired from besting Moff Gideon in combat during The Mandalorian's season 2 finale. Din learned that Bo Katan's prior receiving of the weapon as a gift led to Mandalore's destruction by the Empire, as the weapon is supposed to be won in combat. Another of Din's weapons, the Beskar spear obtained from his journey with Ahsoka Tano in The Mandalorian season 2, was smelted down into a small Mandalorian chain mail garb which Din intended to give to Grogu.

Din then began some brief training with the Darksaber. The Armorer helped the Mandalorian by stating that he cannot fight against the weapon, as the crystal powering it had to work in tandem with the wielder. Noticing Din's lack of skill with the weapon, Paz Vizsla challenged Din to single combat for ownership of the blade. This was due to the fact that Vizsla's ancestor, Tarre Vizsla, was the first Mandalorian Jedi who crafted the Darksaber. Also, another Mandalorian named Pre Vizsla wielded the Darksaber at some point during The Clone Wars.

After a brief battle, Din Djarin bested Vizsla, and the two were asked if they had ever removed their helmets as per Death Watch's customs. Vizsla stated that he had not before Din reluctantly itted that he had. Because he breached these customs, which is especially betraying of their trust after Din Djarin was saved by Death Watch as a child, Djarin was told he was no longer a Mandalorian unless he bathed in the living waters of the mines of Mandalore, before departing for Tatooine.

Obtaining The Naboo Starfighter On Tatooine

The Mandalorian and his Naboo N-1 Starfighter

Once on the desert planet, Din sought out Peli Motto who had aided both he and Grogu during the events of The Mandalorian and had promised Mando a new ship after the destruction of his Razor Crest. Peli presented Djarin with a partially assembled N-1 Starfighter, to Din's initial disappointment as he desired another Razor Crest. However, Djarin assisted Peli in the completion of the ship before taking it for a test flight around Tatooine.

The speed and maneuverability of the starfighter impressed Din, who returned to Peli's workshop only to find Fennec Shand waiting to enlist him for a job as muscle for Boba Fett. The Mandalorian agreed due to Boba Fett and Fennec Shand's help in rescuing Grogu in The Mandalorian season 2. After agreeing to the job, Djarin stated that he first wished to visit Grogu to present him with the formerly crafted Beskar chain mail.

The Mandalorian Visits Luke Skywalker’s Jedi Academy

Din then departed for the forested world on which Luke Skywalker began building his Jedi Academy. There, he was greeted by Luke's droid R2-D2, who led him to the building site of the Jedi Temple. After being left alone by R2, Din fell asleep on a bench erected by one of several droids building the Temple. Eventually, Mando was awakened by none other than Ahsoka Tano. Tano told Mando that she was an old friend of the Skywalker family thanks to he Clone Wars, and asked Din to take a walk with her. Ahsoka then reminded Djarin of her warning to him from The Mandalorian season 2.

This warning was that Din's attachment to Grogu would only make things more difficult for the latter's Jedi training, as Jedi are trained to forego all attachment. Djarin and Tano then watched Grogu and Luke's training from a distance, before Din stated he wanted to give Grogu the armor as the latter has a right to have it as a foundling of the Watch. Tano then offered to give the gift to Grogu, to Din's sadness as he desired to see the child. After coming to with the negative effect their relationship would have on Grogu's training, Din departed for Tatooine.

The Battle For Mos Espa

Mandalorian Boba Fett

Upon his return to Tatooine to fulfill his promise to Boba Fett, Djarin traveled to Freetown and reunited with Sheriff Cobb Vanth from The Mandalorian season 2. Mando asked Vanth for the people of Freetown's aid in Boba's battle against the Pyke Syndicate who reluctantly agreed, before being injured by Cad Bane after Mando's departure. After the Pykes began their attack on Mos Espa, Din Djarin and Boba Fett began the fight against them almost single-handedly while Fennec traveled to Mos Eisley to deal with the Pyke leadership. After putting up a hard fight, Mando and Fett were surrounded, only to be saved by Freetown's garrison led by Taanti, Vanth's friend who wanted revenge against the Pykes.

The Pykes began to retreat, only to be replaced by giant Scorpenek droids which were resistant to most weapons, even the Darksaber, still owned by Din Djarin despite him not being a Mandalorian any longer. Fett flew away for reinforcements, as Din attempted to protect the rest of Fett's forces from the droids. After failing to destroy the droids, Din was forced to retreat in order to reduce the losses of Fett's army.

The Mandalorian And Grogu Reunite

The Mandalorian Mando Holding Grogu

To Mando's surprise, he was able to retreat with the aid of Peli Motto. Peli revealed that she traveled to Mos Espa to reunite Grogu and Din with the former wearing the Beskar armor, meaning he chose the way of the Mandalorians and forewent his Jedi training under Luke Skywalker. The two then fought together in the Battle of Mos Espa, aiding Boba Fett and his Rancor in the destruction of the Scorpenek droids. Grogu was instrumental in calming down the raging Rancor, putting it to sleep using the Force. The Book of Boba Fett's ending had Grogu and Din Djarin together again, with the two flying off in Din's new N-1 Starfighter and setting up the events of The Mandalorian season 3.
