The Mandalorian season 3 is continuing to prove the biggest mistake of the Star Wars sequels through its writing duo. The Mandalorian continues to have Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni as its primary writers in season 3, as was the case with the first two seasons of the Disney+ show. While Rick Famuyiwa contributed to the script on a few episodes throughout the first two seasons, alongside Christopher Yost, the majority of the show has been written by Favreau and Filoni which continues with The Mandalorian season 3.
The fact that the duo are the sole writers of the season proves the biggest mistake of the Star Wars sequel trilogy was in its writers. As Favreau created The Mandalorian, with the help of Dave Filoni, it makes sense for the two of them to be the main writers of the show to tell the story they originally intended. With the Star Wars sequels though, Disney hired J.J. Abrams, Lawrence Kasdan, and Michael Arndt to write The Force Awakens, Rian Johnson for The Last Jedi, and J.J. Abrams and Chris Terrio for The Rise of Skywalker. This led to the main major complaint of the Star Wars sequels: they lacked story cohesion.
The Mandalorian’s Story Continues To Have Singular Focus
One of the biggest positives of The Mandalorian on the other hand is just how focused its story is. Rarely has the story of the show strayed from its central relationship of Din Djarin and Grogu. While there have been some complaints of "filler" episodes throughout the two seasons, almost every episode has played into the overall plot of the show in some way. This will undoubtedly continue with The Mandalorian season 3, with Favreau and Filoni continuing to tell the story they began with the show by being the sole writers.
With the events of The Book of Boba Fett bringing Din Djarin and Grogu back together, as well as setting up the overarching plot of The Mandalorian season 3, it is likely that the story will continue to be very focused going forward. While there are planned crossovers for The Mandalorian universe in the future, it is unlikely that this will cause Favreau and Filoni to lose focus. This was proven with The Book of Boba Fett, with the story and characters neatly returning to The Mandalorian for a greater focus in season 3.
The Mandalorian Proves How The Sequels Should Have Been Made
All of this only goes to highlight just how the sequel trilogy should have been made. The Mandalorian still manages to be very varied in its directorial credits. From Favreau and Filoni to new Star Wars directors like Bryce Dallas Howard, Rick Famuyiwa, Deborah Chow, Taika Waititi, Carl Weathers, Robert Rodriguez, and Peyton Reed, The Mandalorian has allowed different directors to have their distinct styles and tones to translate throughout different episodes all while the story remains focused due to Favreau and Filoni's writing.
This should have been the model that the Star Wars sequel trilogy employed also. If Disney had hired one writer to pen the story for the whole trilogy, but still hired different directors, the overarching story of the trilogy would have felt much more cohesive and allowed for a greater sense of continuity within its scripts while still giving different directors a chance to implement their own visual and tonal styles. This could have been done with the writers of the sequel trilogy as it is, with Disney hiring either J.J. Abrams or Rian Johnson to write the Star Wars trilogy while having three different directors.
The Mandalorian Season 3 Writers Bode Well For Star Wars’ Future Crossover
The aforementioned crossover of The Mandalorian-verse will only benefit from Favreau and Filoni continuing to be the main writers for the show. As announced by Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy at Disney's Investor Day in 2020, Favreau and Filoni were planning two shows alongside The Mandalorian: Rangers of the New Republic, and Ahsoka. While the former's future is unclear after the firing of Gina Carano from Lucasfilm, the latter is set for release in 2023 with Filoni and Favreau at the helm. It was also announced alongside these shows that they, with The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett, will culminate in a climactic story event.
This will undoubtedly be written by Favreau and Filoni as well, given their involvement in Boba Fett and Ahsoka alongside The Mandalorian. Because of this, the duo's involvement in The Mandalorian season 3 continues to bode well for the crossover event once again thanks to story cohesiveness. If Favreau and Filoni continue building out their section of the Star Wars universe, this will only benefit the eventual crossover which will pay off everything that spawned from their original show, The Mandalorian.
