Despite seemingly having a similar premise, Josh Trank and James Mangold were attached at previous points, but the film was eventually scrapped.
Instead, Lucasfilm opted to create another project centered on a bounty hunter traveling the far reaches of space: The Mandalorian. As the first live-action Star Wars series to arrive on Disney+, The Mandalorian was an instant hit when it premiered last November thanks to its expansion of the universe, its intriguing main character, and, of course, what fans wanted from Boba Fett.
Despite the many similarities between Boba Fett and the Mandalorian, plus the timing of the Disney+ series, The Mandalorian was not inspired by the abandoned Boba Fett film. While talking to Deadline, executive producer and director Dave Filoni touched upon the idea that The Mandalorian was influenced by the Boba Fett film and effectively shut it down. "There wasn’t really any crossover with any previous development," Filoni said. He further expanded on this by explaining how the Mandalorian himself evolved in response to Boba Fett's prequels backstory, saying this:
Some of his [Boba Fett's] mystique had been taken away. Jon’s idea was to reimagine that character as a straight-on bounty hunter and take that imagery of the lone gunfighter. The revelation was this idea of this child in a lone wolf cub sensibility.
Interestingly enough, The Mandalorian season 2 is expected to include Boba Fett. He will be played by Temuera Morrison, who previously portrayed Jango Fett in the Star Wars prequel films. The announcement caused both excitement and confusion among fans, seeing as Return of the Jedi. There's bound to be a proper explanation for his return, and hopefully it can live up to fans' expectations.
Boba Fett also isn't the only established Star Wars character possibly making an appearance in The Mandalorian season 2. There are The Clone Wars favorite Ahsoka Tano, and Katee Sackoff has reportedly ed the cast as her animated character Bo-Katan. For a lone gunslinger, the Mandalorian's world seems to be getting crowded. Still, that probably won't lessen fan excitement, seeing as they're already eager to learn more about him and his adorable ward Baby Yoda. At least there's only a few months to go before the next season.
The Mandalorian season 2 will premiere on Disney+ in October.
