Married At First Sight season 18 was under a lot of pressure to make successful matches. David and Michelle, whose wedding was shown in a recent episode, were hoping to be one.

While Michelle has been single for several years, she shared with the MAFS experts that she was looking for a lasting relationship. Goal-oriented and driven, Michelle shared she wanted someone similar, but had wiggle room in of who she could build a life with. David has a far more go-with-the-flow personality than Michelle seems to, but while their personalities differ, the pair seem to have similar values. Both came from a similar place in life, which led the MAFS experts to believe they’d be a good match. Unfortunately, David’s red flags were too much for Michelle from the start.

David Claimed He Wanted An Independent Woman To The Experts

When Faced With Independence, He May Not Actually Want It

During the Married At First Sight season 18 matchmaking process, David was clear that he was looking for a woman who was independent and self-sufficient. He wanted someone who didn’t rely on him for the necessities in life, and could build a life with him rather than around him. While David seems to be firm on this narrative, Michelle may not be the type of independent person he’s looking for.

During David and Michelle’s wedding, it was clear that Michelle was a much more straightforward and independent-minded person than David seemed to be able to handle. While Michelle may have been a bit cold with her Married At First Sight groom, it was clear that David was put off by her personality at times. David’s attitude was often much more cavalier than expected for a Married At First Sight participant, and his home life wasn’t what Michelle expected.

Although David was able to explain his situation well during the MAFS matchmaking special, when it was brought up that he lives with his parents during the wedding, Michelle was floored. Having explained to the experts that she was looking for an independent guy who was set up in life, Michelle was confused by David’s living situation. Reflecting on the fact that he lives with his parents several times during the wedding reception, Michelle had a breakdown over David’s situation and wasn’t sure about moving forward with the marriage. David’s red flags should not have been ignored by the experts

The Experts Need To Be More Intense With Their Vetting

Though the experts felt that David and Michelle were a good enough match that they could pair them, David’s living situation was tough for Michelle. Her reaction to David’s home life is a major red flag, and though their Married At First Sight relationship will likely continue to be bumpy, it could work. It seems likely that Michelle may try to give David the benefit of the doubt, but seeing her breakdown on Married At First Sight season 18 was difficult to watch. Though the experts claim to be thorough, they need to do more to prevent issues like this.
