Jason Aaron's Earth-616 were wielded for the first time. Now, these descendants will encounter their ancestors as the war against Mephisto and the Multiversal Masters of Evil finally begins.
Previously in Jason Aaron's Avengers run which began in 2018, it was established that the first team of Avengers was formed in 1,000,000 B.C. Assembled by the very first human host of the Phoenix, this ancient team featured the likes of Agamotto's Sorcerer Supreme, the first Black Panther Mosi (who preceded Bashenga), Thor's father Odin, a mastodon-riding Ghost Rider, as well as the prehistoric Iron Fist and Starbrand. As such, all of these primordial powers would be continually ed on to new wielders leading to the modern era. Now, the demon lord Mephisto is seeking to destroy this genesis point while the new Masters of Evil have been conquering every other reality in the multiverse, saving Earth-616 for last.
The new preview for Avengers Assemble: Alpha #1 from Jason Aaron, Bryan Hitch, Andrew Currie, and Alex Sinclair sees the Avengers finally meeting their ancient counterparts. However, it looks as though Mephisto and the mysterious Avenger Prime have found them as well, promising a major war that's yet to come on a day that's truly "unlike any other". While Mephisto may have the Masters of Evil and a legion of united variants known as the Council of Red, it's worth noting that Ghost Rider has become the multiversal All-Rider, recruiting Avengers from across multiple realities to form a major army of heroes. As such, it seems as though they'll likely be led by the Avengers of Earth-616, both the past and present iterations. However, readers still need to learn the truth about Avenger Prime whose history still remains an enigma.
The culmination of a story that's been told for almost 4 years, it's going to be very exciting to see the full roster of modern Avengers meeting their prehistoric predecessors. Not only will it be fun to see how they compliment each other, but also what kind of dynamics will present themselves such as Thor teaming up with a younger version of his father (while wielding Mjolnir which currently houses Odin's spirit from the present).
