Marvel's Avengers finally gives Marvel's First Family their time to shine in the world of video games. Developed by Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal, Avengers shows a world where the superhero team has been disgraced and faded from society.
The story sees Kamala Khan (Ms. Marvel) journeying to reunite the Avengers, after finding out they were framed for a catastrophic event. As fans might expect there are going to be plenty of villains to face along the way, including the organization AIM.
AIM hasn't been a big part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe or any recent video games, so it's easy to understand why their motive and origins might not be exactly clear. Here's what AIM is in Marvel's Avengers.
How AIM Was Started
AIM (Advanced-Idea Mechanics) is an organization that's been around for quite a while in the Marvel universe, first introduced in 1966. AIM is comprised up of various terrorists, arms dealers, scientists, and more, with the eventual objective of overthrowing all the governments of the world. The foundations of AIM were established in World War II, as the organization was a research department inside the villainous organization Hydra. Over time, however, AIM branched out and became its own thing, especially as Hydra started to fade into the background.
AIM has several agents that have clashed with heroes over the years, but by far the most famous villain from the organization is MODOK. In his original origin story, MODOK was an AIM scientist named George Tarleton, who was selected for experiments by the organization's Scientist Supreme. After being mutated, MODOK rebelled and ended up taking over AIM himself.
AIM and MODOK in Marvel's Avengers
Marvel's Avengers opens with the opening of a second Avengers facility in San Francisco. The event turns terribly wrong, however, when a terrorist organization led by Taskmaster attacks the city, resulting in widespread destruction and the death of Captain America. Five years later the Avengers have disappeared and San Francisco is now ruled by AIM. The latest trailer for Avengers showed that MODOK will indeed be the main villain or at least one of the main villains, and AIM's goals will likely be similar to what they are in the comics.
Superheroes have been outlawed in the world of Avengers, and this obviously opens up the door to overthrow and take control of the government in the United States, as they're already doing in San Francisco. At the moment it isn't quite clear if MODOK's origin story will remain the same, or if the villain will be changed in some way.
Marvel's Avengers launches on September 4 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
