A new set of cosmetic skins in Marvel's Avengers recently encountered controversy due to adding paid consumable items, developer Crystal Dynamics continues to the comic book adventure title.
Marvel's Avengers was released back in September 2020, and since then the game has utilized a live-service model for its updates. The game periodically receives free new content such as additional playable characters, missions, locations, and boss fights. These include three narrative storylines, such as the recent War for Wakanda add-on. Meanwhile, an in-game Marketplace contains a growing list of cosmetic items for each hero such as skins, emotes, and nameplates. Recently a large percentage of the new skins being added to the game were inspired by the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with designs inspired by films such as Black Widow and Avengers: Endgame. However, in honor of Halloween, Crystal Dynamics recently announced a werewolf skin for Captain America which is inspired by a classic Marvel comic storyline from 1922.
To go along with the terrifying Capwolf skin, Marvel's Avengers has released an additional Supernatural Avengers Outfit Set in time for Halloween. The seven unique skins turn each of Earth's Mightiest Heroes into a creepy monster, including some truly unique designs. Kate Bishop is transformed into a deadly vampire, while Iron Man becomes a creepy jack-o'-lantern. Ms. Marvel becomes a zombie, complete with a brain design on her t-shirt, while Black Panther is a bright glowing ghost. Perhaps most unique of all, though, is Hulk turning into Frankenstein's monster, with an amalgamation of different body parts sewn together. Only poor Hawkeye is left out of the spooky celebration, though the archer may receive his own costume before Halloween arrives.
While Marvel's Avengers is still steeped in controversy, the game is set to continue receiving updates into the future. The game's plethora of Halloween-related cosmetic items is surprising, but a more substantial piece of content will soon arrive as well. An raid, titled Klaw Raid: Discordant Sound, will reportedly be the most challenging piece of content in the game thus far. The mission will take players into Wakanda's vibranium mines, where they must overcome powerful foes and coordinate to solve complex new puzzles. The mission will end in a boss fight against Black Panther's nemesis Klaw, who first appeared in-game in the title's most recent expansion, War for Wakanda.
While Captain America's werewolf skin was already a pleasant seasonal surprise, the Supernatural Avengers Outfit Set gives players even more themed cosmetics to buy. These designs are also quite original, giving creative new looks to the game's roster of superheroes rather than just recoloring old skins. While the Halloween skins are unlikely to distract Marvel's Avengers players from the game's recent controversy, they could be a sign that Crystal Dynamics is putting some effort into the title's future.
Marvel's Avengers is available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Google Stadia and PC.
