Blood Hunt #5 by Jed MacKay and Pepe Larraz concludes with a single word: "Doom." The issue marks the official One World Under Doom, which perfectly aligns with the MCU’s recent major announcement. At this year's San Diego Comic-Con, Kevin Feige introduced Robert Downey Jr., who will be returning to the MCU as none other than Doctor Doom.

A Master of the Mystical Arts, Trained by Witches Since Childhood

Doctor Victor von Doom has long been known as a brilliant scientist and intellectual rival to Reed Richards, but Doom’s prowess is not limited to science. Victor has also proven himself one of the world’s most powerful sorcerers, training his powers since childhood. Born to a Romani witch, Doom’s mother trained him in the mystical arts until a bad deal with Mephisto led to her death. Traumatized by the loss of his mother, which later led to the loss of his father, Doom swore that he would grow powerful enough to bring his mother back from the grave.

Doctor Doom has finally seized the title of Sorcerer Supreme, giving him the resources to assert his will over the entire world.

Years later, while attending State University alongside Reed Richards, Victor completed his potential magnum opus, a machine built from both his scientific mind and mystical mastery meant to revive his mother. The machine malfunctioned, causing the horrific scarring that Doom hides underneath his mask. From that day on, Doom continued to study the mystical arts, willing to venture further into the unknown than even Doctor Strange refused to travel. Now, Doctor Doom has finally seized the title of Sorcerer Supreme, giving him the resources to assert his will over the entire world.

All Hail the New Era of Doom

While Doctor Doom is often portrayed as a villain, and he certainly has been, his motivations are often altruistic. Doom is absolutely an egotistical megalomaniac, but his goal for years has been to unite the world under one banner to fortify humanity against Earth’s constant threats. Contrary to most heroes’ distrusting relationship with Victor, Doom has been sought out multiple times to save the day when the heroes couldn’t. Whether it be helping Wanda contain the powers of the Darkhold or his recent victory over the vampire invasion, Doom has proven himself to be the hero the world sometimes deserves.

As both the comics and the MCU gear up for a new era of Doom, a surge of hype for the beloved anti-villain has swept over Marvel’s fan base. Hopefully, Avengers: Doomsday will better represent Victor’s magical prowess that, so far, every film featuring the character has failed to fully exhibit. Doom’s new reign as the Superior Sorcerer Supreme and the single-handed savior of humanity marks a new age for Marvel that, after 62 years, finally sees Doctor Doom’s realized dream of world domination.
