In an interview with ComicBook.com, Jed MacKay talked about penning the series and the new Sorcerer Supreme costume for Clea. The Death of Doctor Strange writer revealed the inspiration for Clea's new look was inspired by Alex Ross' Earth X artwork. In Earth X by Ross, Jim Krueger and John Paul Leon, Bill Reinhold, Matt Hollingsworth, James Sinclair, and Todd Klein, Clea became the Sorceress Supreme after being tricked into trapping Doctor Strange's astral form in the Realm of the Death. Clea's Sorcerer Supreme costume keeps several key details from Alex Ross' Earth X design, as she wears Doctor Strange's cape, has white, short flowing hair, a sash across the waist, and magical dotted arms. The suit element is slightly lighter than what Clea wore in the groundbreaking series. MacKay told ComicBook.com that revisiting the costume felt correct.

Most of it came from Alex Ross' Earth X design, which is just a very cool look overall and worth revisiting. We wanted something that called back to Stephen, and in inheriting his mantle, it felt correct," MacKay said.

Alex Ross is one of the best artists working in comics (or any medium) as his work on Earth X, Marvels, and Kingdom Come is legendary. So to draw inspiration for Clea's Sorcerer Supreme costume from his Earth X series is a great decision. The design is fabulous and with Clea getting a bigger role in the Marvel Universe than ever before, calling back to Alex Ross' iconic art is an excellent move.
