The Marvel and DC Comics universes nearly traded major characters that almost resulted in She-Hulk ing the Justice League and Martian Manhunter becoming an Avenger. During the DC versus Marvel comic book crossover, there was significant talk about the story ending with a huge twist that would shake up both publishers, as it almost finished with the swap of powerful heroes. Thankfully, the deal never occurred, but it turned out to be more than just chatter and was a real discussion between Marvel and DC.

In an interview with J'onn J'onzz was very similar to Superman. Marz said the discussions happened, and writers tried to envision the story ending with a hero trade until legal departments at DC and Marvel relayed how difficult trading heroes would be.

Marvel and DC's Crossover Almost Ended Much Differently

Marvel and DC have crossed over occasionally in the comics, most notably in 1996's Access, which is the only character owned by Marvel and DC Comics. The DC versus Marvel almost ended in the most unlikely way, with the trade of Martian Manhunter and She-Hulk.

She-Hulk Martian Manhunter Trade Marvel DC Comics

She-Hulk and Martian Manhunter are both beloved characters, but on their own teams, especially in the 90s when DC versus Marvel came out, they've often been pushed aside when it comes to starring roles. The trade could have given them new agency in an entirely different universe. While the character swap fizzled, Marz itted that it would have been "good fun" to make the trade for She-Hulk and Martian Manhunter happen but wasn't sure "what could have been done" to make it actually happen. As Marz stated, seeing She-Hulk the Justice League and Martian Manhunter potentially suiting up alongside the Avengers would have been a lot of fun.

Ultimately, it's a good thing for both characters that the trade never happened. She-Hulk has become a main hero in the Marvel Universe again, currently starring in a critically acclaimed ongoing comic and recently appearing in a live-action MCU series. Meanwhile, the DC Universe without Martian Manhunter, a key player in the Justice League, would feel off. However, there's no denying a potential character trade of She-Hulk and Martian Manhunter would have changed comics forever, as it represents one of the comic book medium's greatest real-life "What If...?'" moments.
