Marvel has announced Fantastic Four: Antithesis, written and illustrated by the blockbuster team-up of Mark Waid and none other than Neal Adams.

This August, witness Waid’s return to Marvel’s first family, with art duties handled by the creator-rights advocate and artist extraordinaire, as they bring us the previously untold tale of Antithesis, a brand new antagonist so powerful it will take the combined might of the FF, Dark Knight in Batman and Detective Comics, as well as for the political and prescient Green Lantern/Green Arrow. Waid was recently named Publisher at Humanoids, home to European masters like Jodorosky and Moebius. Adams is the co-founder of Continuity Associates, and has been writing and drawing mini-series at DC, such as Batman: Odyssey and Superman: Coming of the Supermen.

“Working with Neal Adams has been a dream of mine since I was a kid. To share the page with a man of his talent is an honor,” Waid says. “The story begins with the FF struggling to prevent an extinction event on Earth and just goes more cosmic from there. We all know of Galactus, but until now, no one has met his Antithesis.”

The Big Two are rebounding hard from the Covid-related Diamond delays, with some bombshell announcements. Some are previously planned events, but news like this is a refreshing revelation and affirmation that talent still sells. Reed, Sue, Ben and Johnny have never moved as many units as the X-men, but they remain the gold standard when it comes to the Stan Lee brand of flawed, all-too-human superheroes. Besides, which of us fanboys can resist a first appearance?
