Warning: SPOILERS for Scarlet Witch #4From Galactus to Eternity, Marvel Comics’ cosmic hierarchy is one of fans’ most beloved aspects of the House of Ideas. With countless universal forces at play, Marvel’s multiversal power structure is constantly shifting, rearranging, and rewriting. But one cosmic being is above all others – and she’s made her feelings on Marvel’s other cosmic gods abundantly clear.

Scarlet Witch #4 by Steve Orlando, Jacopo Camagni, Frank William, and Ariana Maher pits the titular Avengers icon against the Griever at the End of All Things. A cosmic “angel” of untold power, the Griever faces off against Wanda – empowered by the Griever’s own sister, the Queen of Nevers – and makes clear her place in the cosmic hierarchy.

Comic book s: Griever beats Scarlet Witch.

Battering the Scarlet Witch, Griever says, “Even universal concepts – even Death itself – will meet my end.” And though she’s ultimately scattered across existence thanks to Wanda and her siblings, she adds an interesting wrinkle to the fabric of Marvel’s universal forces.

The End of All Things Applies to Lady Death, Too

With all the Universal aspects out there in the Marvel Universe, beings like the Griever can initially seem to be yet another mysterious force thrown into the mix of cosmic concepts. But her boasts to the Scarlet Witch immediately set her power levels a cut above the rest of her peers. After all, she’s essentially portraying herself as the ultimate reaper, promising even to come for Lady Death before the end of all things. Anyone operating at the level of a Universal Aspect is not to be taken lightly, but ending Death itself is another matter entirely.

Considering Griever’s purported levels of power, she’s instantly launched into the top tier of Marvel cosmic power rankings, right up there with entities like Galactus, Enigma, and potentially Eternity itself. Even her defeat at the hands of the Scarlet Witch and her fellow heroes isn’t so much of a death as it is an eons-long delay, but eventually the Griever will return. And when she does, she’ll have that much more to prove – and that much more revenge to take.

Marvel Comics’ cosmology is one of its most interesting aspects, and the Griever at the End of All Things changes everything fans thought they knew about the House of Idea’s universal power structure. Whether the Griever will ultimately outlive even Death itself remains to be seen, but the fact that it’s even a possibility says a lot about the level of power at which she operates. And should the Griever ever cross paths against Marvel Comics' Galactus, the Living Tribunal, or even Eternity, she’ll have the opportunity to prove her cosmic dominance once and for all.
