In Marvel Unleashed, the Pet Avengers have been facing the biggest threat of their careers, and without their most powerful member. Yet as seen in issue four, the final of the series, they rally together and when the dust settles, the Pet Avengers are official.

Marvel Unleashed #4 is written by Kyle Starks and Jesus Hervas. Throughout the series, the team has been down a member: Lockjaw, arguably their most powerful. However, they succeed in restoring his health and he quickly disposes of Blackheart. After returning to his comrades, Throg, who has become the unofficial team leader, gives a stirring speech

He tells his teammates that others have viewed them as a joke, but now the time has come for them to step up and show the world they are true heroes. The team then heads off to fight evil, striking a cool pose while they do it.

Marvel's Cutest Team is Also One of Its Most Powerful

As the name implies, the Pet Avengers are the animal companions of Marvel’s biggest heroes. Their include Lockjaw and Redwing, among others. Throg, a frog who wields the power of Thor, has emerged as the team’s leader. Marvel Unleashed has been the Pet Avengers’ biggest adventure to date. The evil Blackheart, the son of Mephisto, kidnapped Lockjaw, seeking to harness the dog’s teleportation powers. The Pet Avengers, ed by D-Dog, were all that stood between Earth and total annihilation, and it was D-Dog’s sacrifice that gave the team the impetus to officially come together.

Throg was correct: the Pet Avengers have been viewed as a joke, Marvel Unleashed shows their potential to be one of the publisher’s best teams. While their human companions may view them as just pets, the Pet Avengers possess a great deal of power on their own, power their humans do not seem to be aware of. This power was on display throughout Marvel Unleashed. Blackheart is Mephisto’s son and is a terrifying presence in his own right. Yet the Pet Avengers went toe to toe with him, and the killing blow was delivered thanks to Lockjaw’s human Black Bolt.

Now that the Pet Avengers have been established as Marvel’s next big team, they will need a worthy menace. The Pet Avengers features some powerful characters, such as Throg, who commands the power of Asgard, and Lockjaw, who can teleport anywhere in space. Defeating Blackheart was no small feat, setting the bar high for their next adventure. Marvel has established the Pet Avengers as their newest team, and now it is on future creators to give them threats worthy of their power.
