Fans of Marvel Rivals are noticing that most players do not want to play the role of Vanguard, which is making matches a bit more tedious than usual. Titles such as Overwatch have a similar problem, as most players end up wanting to play DPS or in order to maximize their damage output or be away from the frontline. A major downside to this is that there is no one choosing to play aggressively and push, causing losses over and over.
In a recent Reddit post by Fi3nd7, they state, "It makes no sense why we keep shoehorning these archaic design paradigms that so clearly should be aged out and replaced with something more innovative and interesting." They believe that if there were more diverse tank options in Marvel Rivals, more players would be willing to play the role. The topic quickly gained traction, as others believe that there may be other reasons players shy away from being front and center in battle.
Why Is No One Picking Tank In Marvel Rivals?
The Choices Are Slim, But Those Wanting To Play Vanguard Are Few And Far Between
While there are several Vanguards to choose from in Marvel Rivals, including Magneto, Thor, Peni Parker, Hulk, and Groot, there could always be a few more, according to the fans. While the chances of someone maining a tank role are slim, some do enjoy playing Vanguard, as NoPattern2009 states, "Vanguard is dope. Peni is dope. Magnus is dope. Venom and Thor are dope. I consistently deal more damage and get more kills and die less than the duelists that I get matched with." Not everyone shares this sentiment though as Prizmatik7 believes that the reason most players do not choose a tank is due to the skill-gap that comes with it.
"People don’t want to play tank because the general perception of what a “tank” should be, doesn’t hold up that well in team shooter game design. It’s about “creating/holding space and applying pressure” (a very broad and difficult-to-understand concept without being dedicated to the role of a team shooter tank)." - Prizmatik7
Other s highlight the best tanks in their opinion as well as which tanks seem to do the worst. Thor is a popular choice among the thread, as players claim his damage is above the rest of the tanks and his ability to push the opposition back and create space is seemingly unmatched other than by Dr. Strange.
Our Take: Tanking Is Hard & The Options Are Slim
While Tanking Is Fun, You Are Really Dependent On The Rest Of Your Team
As someone who flexes and plays multiple roles, I do understand wanting more options when it comes to Vanguard heroes. Personally, I would like to see more added down the line, and while a few are coming, the toolkits remain unknown at this time. Tanking isn't easy, and if you don't have great heals pumping out constantly, you are going to get mowed down by the DPS on the opposing team rather quickly.

Marvel Rivals Leaks Claim Five New Heroes Are Coming, Including Professor X, Locus & More
Marvel Rivals files allegedly show five new heroes might be coming to the roster, including some hard hitters like Professor X, Locus, and more.
So far, I have not had a hard time with players choosing to tank, as most players enjoy playing Thor and Dr. Strange, but I do think in the higher ranks it might become more of an issue. Hopefully, the new heroes said to be coming to Marvel Rivals, including The Thing, will make filling the role of Vanguard slightly easier for those experiencing issues.
