Something's Different With The Superior Spider-Man Suit

The Superior Suit Doesn't Match The Others

As spotted by Jaimemarvel, Peter's Superior Spider-Man suit appears differently in the Suits menu. Whereas all of the other thumbnails for the suits feature Spider-Man looking slightly to the right of the screen, the Superior Spider-Man suit sticks out because it's the only one that stares straight forward at the player.

The Superior Spider-Man suit is adapted from Dan Slott's comic book run of the same name, in which a dying Otto Octavius "killed" Peter and placed his own consciousness into the hero's body. During this time, Otto believed he could be a "Superior" Spider-Man to Peter, and takes on many of Peter's former foes, namely the Sinister Six, while also attempting to "improve" Peter Parker's personal life as well. Unlike Peter, however, Otto goes too far at times and publicly executes villains, such as Massacre. Ultimately, Otto sacrifices himself to restore the original Spider-Man - whose consciousness wasn't completely removed, just subdued - in order to save New York City.

Could Insomniac Adapt Superior Spider-Man In Marvel's Spider-Man 3?

Otto Octavius Has Plans For The "Final Chapter"

Spider-Man Remastered - Peter and Otto

Insomniac introduced Otto Octavius as Peter's mentor in Marvel's Spider-Man, with the two developing an enhanced version of prosthetic limbs before Otto's transformation into Doctor Octopus. Throughout the game, it was revealed that Otto had some kind of rapidly degenerative neurological disorder that focused on his motor functions, but not his mind, leaving him fearful that he would become a "prisoner" within his own body, which pushed him to create the character's iconic tentacle arms.

While Otto didn't appear in Marvel's Spider-Man 2's main story, Norman Osborn did visit him at the R.A.F.T. supermax prison in the game's mid-credits scene. Norman seeks revenge on the Spider-Men for "ruining" his son, Harry, when they freed him from the Venom symbiote and left him brain-dead, and turns to Otto, who he correctly believes knows their secret identities. While Otto doesn't indulge Norman's request, coldly telling him "We all have to experience loss. Even you, Norman." it is clear that he has his own plan to get revenge on the heroes, writing what he describes as "the final chapter".

Otto's hand still shaking as he writes is a clear indicator that his body's deterioration is still a key part of the character's motives going forward. Therefore, the idea of Otto escaping a body that's becoming more immobile, rather than escaping death, could be a way to spin the Superior Spider-Man arc in Marvel's Spider-Man 3.

Insomniac May Already Be Teasing Superior Spider-Man's Arrival

There's More To Otto's Credits Scene Appearance

Jaimemarvel's Reddit post about the Superior Spider-Man suit suggests that Insomniac is foreshadowing something with the difference in position for that specific suit compared to the others creating the idea that Otto is watching the players as he plots his next move. Of course, it could simply be a mistake on Insomniac's part with the thumbnail that the studio hasn't deemed high enough of a priority to correct. It is worth noting some of the thumbnails for the Amazing 2 and Webbed suits no longer match their in-game counterparts following patches, so these don't tend to get updated.

To further back up Jaimemarvel's theory that Insomniac is foreshadowing Otto's Superior Spider-Man arc, NonameB4ndit responded to the post with a screenshot of Otto talking about the "final chapter" in the mid-credits scene, which they believe showed more foreshadowing for Otto's plan to take over a Spider-Person's body. In the image, the lighting has made the shadow of Otto's glasses stretch upwards on his face to create the shape of the lenses on Spider-Man's mask.

The Inclusion Of Peter's Superior Suit In Spider-Man 2 May Tease A Very Different Adaptation

It Goes Against Insomniac's Logic Surrounding Previous Suit Omissions

It's extremely possible that Insomniac is building up to some kind of adaptation of Superior Spider-Man, but it could have a very different spin on the story. The studio's inclusion of Peter's Superior costume in Marvel's Spider-Man 2 goes against its logic surrounding the symbiote suits' omission in Marvel's Spider-Man, where the fan-favorite costumes weren't added to make their arrival in Marvel's Spider-Man 2's storyline more meaningful.

In Chip Zdarsky and Mark Bagley's acclaimed Spider-Man: Life Story comic book arc - which retells key moments from Spider-Man's decades-long history with Peter aging in real-time from the 1960s to the 2010s - Otto targets the younger Spider-Man, Miles Morales, rather than Peter Parker. With Miles' additional youth, additional bioelectrical abilities, and him becoming the primary Spider-Man while Peter takes a break to get his personal life back on track, Marvel's Spider-Man 3 could follow suit.

Insomniac could spin the Superior Spider-Man story to have Peter coming out of his hiatus to free a Miles Morales who Otto Octavius has taken over. In doing so, Marvel's Spider-Man 3 could also potentially invert the boss battle in Marvel's Spider-Man 2, where players had to fight a corrupted, symbiote-enhanced version of Peter as Miles, and would instead show what it's like to be on the other side of Miles' powerful attacks.
