A new prequel comic for Venom voiced by legendary actor Tony Todd. However, in the time leading up to the events of the release, the two Spider-Men have apparently been busy facing darker threats to New York, which will be highlighted in a new prequel.
According to an announcement from PlayStation, Sony and Marvel Comics have officially teamed up to publish a new comic that will fill fans of the game in on what has happened following the events of Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Marvel's Spider-Man 2 #1 will be helmed by Christos Gage and Ig Guara with a story that focuses on Peter, Miles and MJ as they "attempt to balance their responsibilities to the city, and each other." However, this will also include them digging into a brand new supervillain in town who is more powerful than anyone they've come across in the Gamerverse. In fact, their new foe the Hood will make them question everything they've ever learned as they try to figure out if magic is truly real.
The Hood Brings Magic to the Spider-Man Games (Literally)
Up until this point, the villains Peter and Miles have faced have had abilities channeled through science. From Doc Ock's arms to the Tinkerer's technology, they've mostly encountered people who have used their intelligence to craft powers. Even Mr. Negative fits into this field as his powers come from an experiment gone wrong when he was a child. The Hood, on the other hand, is purely a magical foe. First created in 2002 by Brian K. Vaughan, Kyle Hotz and Eric Powell, the character achieved his powers by stealing the hood and boots of a Nisanti demon. These abilities allowed him to build an army in the criminal underworld and take thieving to the next level as he battled heroes and villains alike to have his empire reign supreme. His appearance here will undoubtedly change things up for the heroes as he throws a new element into the mix.
Why the Hood Could End Up Being Another Mysterio
Of course, knowing the talent behind the Marvel's Spider-Man team, the Hood could end up being more than meets the eye. The official announcement from PlayStation highlights that the question of whether magic is real will be a consistent theme for the prequel. While the Hood could remain a purely magical villain from beginning to end, there is a possibility that a twist is in the works that could make him similar to Mysterio. The latter villain is known for using his talent in special effects to manipulate the minds of his opponents and make them believe that they are experiencing threats that aren't even there. To keep the Gamerverse grounded in a scientific reality, it's entirely possible that the Hood's magic could have a logical explanation similar to the villains who came before him. While at first Peter, Miles and MJ may not be able to explain his abilities at first glance, things could come to light later down the line as they investigate him further.
Marvel's Spider-Man 2 #1 will be released for free on May 6 for Free Comic Book Day. Fans of the games and Spider-Man in general will want to pick up a copy to not only prepare for the game but also revisit the amazing world crafted by Insomniac Games. It's an exciting time to be a fan of the webhead, and this prequel for the hyped-up Spider-Man 2 will be the perfect read as it introduces its darkest foe yet.
