Logan will naturally be the star of the Marvel’s Wolverine, but there are plenty of fan-favorite X-Men characters who could also make an appearance. Insomniac sent shockwaves throughout the gaming world with the announcement of Marvel’s Wolverine during last September’s PlayStation Showcase livestream, in which fans saw a brief teaser trailer of Logan extending his infamous Adamantium claws amid a pile of bodies in a ruined bar.
Details surrounding Marvel island of Madripoor.
Marvel Heroes Have Connections To Madripoor
The rugged Southeast Asian island of Madripoor should be readily familiar to mainstream Marvel fans, as it was briefly featured in 2021'sThe Falcon and the Winter Solider, where the titular duo of Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes teamed up to tackle the Flag Smashers. Before that, Wolverine traveled to Madripoor during a memorable comic book storyline in the late 1980s that saw him don an eyepatch and take on the persona of “Patch”, where he made regular appearances at the Princess Bar. He isn’t the only mutant to travel to Madripoor though, and several of the other classic Marvel characters who appeared during this comic arc could also make appearances in Marvel’s Wolverine to either assist everyone’s favorite Canadian mutant or stand as an obstacle in his way. Other iconic X-Men characters could also help Wolverine, with the hope of there being a full X-Men game in the future.
Professor X Could Tie Marvel’s Wolverine To The X-Men
No X-Men story - even a Logan spinoff game - would be complete without the wise and noble Professor Charles Xavier, who has served as a mentor to plenty of troubled mutants over the years - Wolverine included. While Xavier likely wouldn’t be a main character in Marvel’s Wolverine, the telepathic leader could feature in a brief cameo at the beginning or even a post-credit cutscene like the ones that established Venom in the Marvel’s Spider-Man games. At the very least, PS5 players should expect a few references to the founder of the X-Men in Marvel’s Wolverine - even if the game’s storyline is set far from the Professor’s mansion home in Salem, New York.
Logan Could Guide Jubilee In Marvel’s Wolverine
As gruff and gritty as Logan can be, he often finds himself as a surrogate father for the younger of the X-Men. In the live-action films, Wolverine helped a troubled Rogue come to with her powers, and in the beloved X-Men animated series of the 1990s, Jubilee shared a similar relationship with the rough-tempered berzerker. Marvel’s Wolverine could feature a version of this father/daughter dynamic by having Jubilee follow Logan to Madripoor. Jubilee could also serve as a window for players who aren’t too familiar with Logan’s designated section of the Marvel Universe, and her energy-based powers could come in handy during certain combat sections.
Marvel’s Wolverine Could Introduce Deadpool To The Insomniac Universe
While some fans might not want Deadpool to appear in Marvel’s Wolverine due to his comedic nature clashing with the game's supposedly serious tone, there is little denying that the Merch with a Mouth has a shared history with Logan across every possible medium - including video games. The infamous X-Men Origins: Wolverine version of Deadpool served as the final boss in the surprisingly great 2009 tie-in game, and Logan made a cameo appearance in Deadpool’s own 2016 solo outing. With Wade and Logan set to share the silver screen in the Deadpool 3, the timing could be just right for Deadpool to pop in for a quick cameo in Marvel’s Wolverine.
Sabertooth Could Cause Trouble In Marvel’s Wolverine
Wolverine has made many powerful foes over the years, and none are as dangerous and determined as Sabertooth. The two ferocious mutants and mortal enemies have naturally battled against each other in countless video games - Wolverine and Sabertooth fight in Marvel's Midnight Suns, for instance. Victor Creed serves as a dark reflection of Logan, and it wouldn’t be at all surprising if the vicious mutant appears follows Logan to Madripoor to cause even more trouble for his legendary arch-nemesis as a major villain in Marvel’s Wolverine.
Marvel’s Wolverine Could See Gambit Hit The Streets
Remy LeBeau is another popular mutant in the Marvel Universe, a New Orleans-born thief and street hustler with the ability to charge any object he touches with kinetic energy. Just like Deadpool and Sabretooth, Gambit was previously featured as a boss in the X-Men Origins: Wolverine game and a playable hero alongside Logan in the X-Men Legends series that gave Wolverine his most iconic video game voice. Remy’s also been to Madripoor a couple of times himself in the comics, and his knowledge of the criminal underworld would make him a valuable partner in Marvel’s Wolverine. If anyone can help Logan survive on the mean streets of Madripoor, it’s his fellow X-Man Gambit.
Magneto’s X-Mansion Could Appear In Marvel’s Wolverine
Magneto has been both a dangerous foe and an unlikely ally to Wolverine, with his ability to manipulate Logan’s Adamantium skeleton making him one of the few Marvel characters that can truly harm the heroic mutant. The Master of Magnetism has also had a presence in Madripoor in more recent years, as he once built his own version of Xavier’s X-Mansion to serve as a base of operations in the island’s upper-class Hightown region. While Magneto himself probably won’t be a major villain in Marvel’s Wolverine, his X-Mansion could be included as an Easter Egg, similar to the Avengers Tower in Marvel’s Spider-Man.
Madame Viper Could Rule Madripoor In Marvel’s Wolverine
In the comics, Madame Viper is more commonly associated with non-mutant terrorist organizations like Hydra and the Serpent Society, though a radically altered version of the villainess served as a major antagonist in the 2013 spin-off film The Wolverine. At one point, she was also the undisputed ruler of Madripoor, which could lead to her inclusion in Marvel’s Wolverine as a ing villain - if not the main foe players have to defeat. Logan could find himself battling Viper’s Hydra forces during his travels in Madripoor, which could not only add variety to the game’s enemy types but also serve as yet another tie to Insominac's larger Marvel gaming universe.
Marvel’s Wolverine Could Feature Nick Fury
Colonel Nick Fury isn’t necessarily an X-Men-centric character, but the famed director of S.H.I.E.L.D has been known to keep tabs on mutants like Wolverine from time to time. He was also featured in the famous Larry Hama-written comic storyline that introduced Madripoor and Logan’s “Patch” persona, so he could very well appear in Marvel’s Wolverine if the game is indeed drawing influence from this arc. Fury could serve as either an uneasy ally or reluctant enemy to Wolverine as he journeys across Madripoor, and his connections to both S.H.I.E.L.D and the Avengers would be a great connecting tissue to Insomniac’s previous Marvel games that have already hinted at the existence of these powerful super-groups.
