Since the debut of the next secret Mass Effect N7 Day teaser video, project director Michael Gamble took to Twitter to post another cryptic detail about Liara. “Liara T’Soni (Doctor, Shadow Broker and ). ” She could take on many titles, and one of the first to come to mind is Matriarch. This theory is fueled by her appearance in the announcement trailer, in which some claim she has wrinkles around her eyes, indicating she has aged. However, the text in the bottom left of the most recent teaser video implies that the transmission occurs only four years after the events of Mass Effect 3. This opens up some other mantles the Asari doctor could take on. The galaxy will definitely need her help, as the new Mass Effect image may suggest that Shepard nearly failed.Related: Mass Effect's Male Shepard Was Inspired By A Surprising Famous Actor

Liara May Be A Spectre In Mass Effect 4

Mass Effect 3 takes place in the year 2186, and the N7 Day transmission is date and time stamped 11/7/90. While it is certainly possible that this could imply one hundred and four years after Mass Effect 3, the most apparent and more likely read is that Mass Effect 4 will take place about four years after the Reapers were defeated. So this would mean that Liara has not aged into Matriarch status, despite her supposed aging in the announcement trailer. The wrinkles around her eyes are most likely a result of higher graphical fidelity and some character design changes, explaining why Liara looks older in Mass Effect 4.

Following the logic that Liara is not an Asari Matriarch, and given the project director’s Tweet, the most probable role that Liara can fill is as a Council Spectre. She is certainly deserving of the title after helping Shepard defeat the Reapers. In tandem with her role as the Shadow Broker, Spectre Liara would be a powerful player in the galaxy. She’d have practically all the resources she could dream of, including a new version of the Geth. The decoded audio from the transmission features Liara speaking with a Geth unit about a startling discovery. Maybe she was able to help rebuild the Geth after their demise in Mass Effect 3’s Destroy Ending.

The fact that Liara mentions the Council in the transmission is also notable. It may just be her being proactive about whatever threat she has discovered, but it can be interpreted as if she is obligated to report her findings to the Council, as befitting the role of a Spectre. There is still much left to unpack from the N7 Day transmission, but what is certain is that Liara will be a critical character in Mass Effect 4.
