The New Mass Effect Appears To Follow The Reaper War

While a whole new Mass Effect trilogy may sound worrisome to fans burned by seemingly abandoned plot lines for Mass Effect Andromeda, like the missing Quarian Ark, the confidence BioWare exudes in releasing these cryptic teasers for fans to decode gives the impression that it is putting a lot of effort into the series’ future and are committed to making a story that will uphold the best aspects of the trilogy. For starters, it appears that Mass Effect 4 will take place in the Milky Way Galaxy, picking up a few years after the ending of Mass Effect 3. This provides the opportunity to see the consequences of defeating the Reapers and to resolve the somewhat disappointing conclusion of the trilogy.

What A New Mass Effect Trilogy Could Be About

Exploring a galaxy in repair and mourning after the devastation of the Reaper War is a fascinating setting for future adventures in Mass Effect. This weakened state of the Milky Way seems to be a perfect time for new foes to emerge and take advantage of the aftermath, which is implied in Liara’s decoded message in Mass Effect's teaser video. This message also features a Geth, the AI race that was purportedly destroyed after Mass Effect 3’s Destroy ending. This means that the classic Mass Effect motif of synthetic and organic relations will return in the next game, which opens an exploration of how the Reaper’s thesis - that synthetics will always rebel against their organic creators - was wrong.

The next game will also likely tie in unresolved plot lines from Mass Effect Andromeda, like the Mysterious Benefactor. There’s much to be hopeful about in a new Mass Effect trilogy, and the developers appear to be applying the tough lessons they learned from Mass Effect 3’s ending and Andromeda’s poor reception. Mass Effect 4 is undoubtedly still many years away from launch, which is a good sign that BioWare is giving the game the time it needs to be the series’ much-needed refreshment.
