Commander Shepard and his crew will make a long-awaited return with the release of Mass Effect: Legendary Edition. The BioWare release will combine the original Mass Effect trilogy's intergalactic adventures into one remastered experience on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. But when should longtime N7 fans expect the Legendary Edition rerelease of the RPG series?

BioWare announced plans to remaster Mass Effect 12, and on November 7, 2020. In a press release, the series' creative director, Casey Hudson, shed light on the developer's vision for the relaunch, explaining BioWare has no intention of altering the narrative that enchanted millions of players. Instead, he said the plan is to "modernize the experience so that fans and new players can experience the original work in its best possible form." Mass Effect: Legendary Edition will be BioWare's first major release since the panned launch of Anthem in 2019, and gamers won't need to wait much longer.

Mass Effect: Legendary Edition will hit shelves on May 14, 2021, with a slew of upgrades. The trilogy's visual fidelity will most notably be improved, with more detailed textures, 4K resolution, and HDR. A boost in frame rates is also anticipated to enhance how all three games run. Plus, a big cut down on load times will eliminate annoyingly length elevator rides that bogged down the original Mass Effect. The remaster is expected to make the Mass Effect trilogy into a seamless experience, but BioWare has also made some cuts.

BioWare scrapped DLC, developed by Demiurge Studios, won't be included. Demiurge's source code for the expansion was filled with corrupted data. Since this rendered it unusable, BioWare would have had to rebuild the DLC from the ground up, which it decided against.

Mass Effect: Legendary Edition might not include every piece of content each of the trilogy's installments rolled out with, but that could end up being a positive thing. The series is best known for its enchanting single-player campaign and diverse cast of characters. A lean release means BioWare can hone in on making the most crucial elements of its games shine - and deliver them to fans in a timely fashion on May 14.
