Warning: Spoilers for Masters of the Universe: Revolution

Summary

  • Masters of the Universe: Revelation brings back forgotten characters like Snout Spout and Granamyr with fresh, interesting designs.
  • Characters like Gwildor and Spikor return, deemed too strange or unpopular for previous series, in a more liberal reboot.
  • Fans can expect to see revamped versions of classic characters like Faker and Rio Blast in Masters of the Universe: Revolution on Netflix.

Kevin Smith's Masters of the Universe: Revelation's cast has brought back some old faces.

There are a few reasons why these characters in particular never got the chance to return in the many He-Man series that have come and gone since the original Masters of the Universe. Some of them were simply too strange, turning off potential new fans with powers even more awkward than Stinkor's foul stench or Fisto's massive hand. In addition to this, many of these heroes and villains were never popular enough in the first place to warrant a return to the small screen. Luckily, Kevin Smith's reboot series has been far more liberal with its requirements for entry.

10 Snout Spout

The firefighting hero with a unique head

Snout Spout Masters of the Universe

While many of the stranger He-Man characters were born out of a necessity to fill out Skeletor and Hordak's rosters of henchmen, Snout Spout is a rare hero kept out of the spotlight for some time. A normal human for the most part, Snout Spout is a cyborg with, of all things, the head of a robotic elephant. With his cybernetic trunk, Snout Spout is able to fill up and shoot out gallons of high-pressure water to fight fires and bad guys alike. Masters of the Universe: Revolution used this core concept to create an interesting character design.

9 Granamyr

One of Eternia's most ancient beings

A centuries-old dragon, Granamyr is one of the few survivors of a distant war between humans and dragons in Eternia's ancient past. Originally making appearances in both He-Man and the Masters of the Universe and She-Ra: Princess of Power, Granamyr is one of the few threats He-Man was never able to overcome with brute strength alone, often requiring other means to placate. Granamyr eventually comes to see things He-Man's way, granting his assistance to the frozen Man-At-Arms. Granamyr gets quite the glow-up in Masters of the Universe: Revolution, yet again holding the secrets to powerful magic.

8 Gwildor

A live-action character few thought would return

Unlike most classic He-Man characters, Gwildor was actually originally introduced in the live-action Masters of the Universe film starring Dolph Lundgren. A small, goblin-like creature with an aptitude for magic items, the grump Gwildor wasn't exactly a fan favorite. Kevin Smith's Masters of the Universe reboot series reintroduced him as a key player, helping Man-At-Arms "hack" a magic sword to use it as a cure for Skeletek's techno-organic virus. Interestingly, the presence of Gwildor seems to confirm the live-action movie as canon within the new Masters of the Universe continuity.

7 Spikor

A bristly villain that never got another chance to shine

Spikor Masters of the Universe Villain

One of Skeletor's many evil minions that never got to re-appear in a freshly-animated reboot of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, Spikor finally received another chance to shine in Masters of the Universe: Revelation. True to his name, Spikor is a menacing figure covered in deadly spikes, using them for some sinister off-screen torture methods that forced the original series to fade to black. The more mature tone of Masters of the Universe: Revelation was the perfect place to re-introduce Spikor as a menacing minor villain, finally able to use his spikes on-screen.

6 Rio Blast

A heroic gunslinger that got another shot at animation

Rio Blast Masters of the Universe

Similarly to Snout Spout, Rio Blast was another classic Masters of the Universe figure fighting on the side of He-Man, largely confined to the comics after his initial animated appearance. Though essentially a normal human, Rio Blast is the closest thing Eternia has to a cowboy-like gunslinger, absolutely bristling with dangerous projectile weaponry alongside a spiffy pair of chaps to boot. Rio Blast is counted among Snout Spout and Buzz-Off during the invasion of Subternia in the first episode, and s them again in the climactic battle during Masters of the Universe: Revolution's ending.

5 He-Ro

A neolithic warrior who makes his animation debut

He-Ro in MOTU_ Revelation

He-Ro was initially part of a prequel line of toys supplementing the main Masters of the Universe collection under the "Preternia" banner. Acting as a sort of pre-historical analog of Eternia's modern day, He-Ro is the primary protagonist of the Preternia setting, taking He-Man's place as a prototypical version of the same character. He-Ro makes his animated debut for the first time in Masters of the Universe: Revelation, now retconned as a son of King Grayskull, who lived 500 years before the present setting of the series.

In Masters of the Universe: Revelation, Preternia refers to the setting's afterlife world rather than Eternia's pre-history.

4 Clamp Champ

Brought his signature weapon to animation for the first time

Another toy-line-exclusive character to make his animation debut in Masters of the Universe: Revelation, Clamp Champ was named for his signature weapon, a massive claw-like clamp capable of crushing robots to pieces. Referred to by his real name, Raenius, to circumvent his undoubtedly silly title, Clamp Champ falls alongside Fisto to Skeletor's attack in the first episode of the reboot series, becoming an undead warrior thrall to the evil sorcerer. Clamp Champ's defeat was only one small aspect of the controversial first episode that led to Masters of the Universe: Revelation's frosty reception.

3 Stonedar

Revolution brought the geological transformer back to life

Stonedar Masters of the Universe

One of the strangest gimmicks the Masters of the Universe franchise ever conceived for a toy was the bizarre Rock People first introduced in She-Ra: Princess of Power, quickly rolled out with an accompanying line of figures. With the ability to transform into a boulder, Stonedar's powers are less than impressive, but that didn't stop Masters of the Universe: Revolution from bringing back the character for the first time in decades, turning his rocky form into armor rather than a cumbersome alternate mode. Oddly, Stonedar's companion Rokkon is nowhere to be seen in the new adaptation.

2 Faker

He-Man's infamous body double finally returned to the small screen

Faker Master of the Universe Villain

Faker is an interesting concept for a character as far as minor He-Man villains go, assuming the form of Prince Adam's alter-ego with frightening accuracy. Underneath the facade, Faker is a menacing cybernetic being with silver skin and blood-red eyes, enjoying one of the Masters of the Universe: Revelation. While his powers seem to be inherent in the original series, Masters of the Universe: Revelation instead has his disguise coming from Skeletor's Shaper staff, which is apparently still good enough to fool The Sorceress herself.

1 Blast-Attak

Revelation took on the tricky modular character

Blast-Attak He-Man toy

With his trademark re-configuring body, it's no wonder that animation studios before Netflix were unwilling to try their hand at animating Blast-Attak. True to his name, Blast-Attak is able to blow himself up, dealing massive damage to his surrounding environment before literally pulling his body back together unharmed. A cybernetic character, Blast-Attak was one of the acolytes of Motherboard in Masters of the Universe: Revelation, ultimately getting his signature time bomb used against his allies in the second episode of the series.

Masters of the Universe: Revelation and Masters of the Universe: Revolution are streaming on Netflix.
