Tim Burton is the king of creating quirky, gothic characters who are filled with interesting personas. Whether it's Edward Scissorhands, or Jack Skellington, all these fictional Burton creations play a significant role in pop culture to this very day.

His characters are fascinating, and they tend to have an eccentric demeanor that separates them from what audiences are used to seeing on the big screen. The Myers-Briggs Personality Type® of Tim Burton's best characters are equally interesting to learn of, focusing on Tim Burton's most iconic creations.

UPDATE: 2022/12/10 By Ruby Brown

Tim Burton has brought his creativity to audiences once again with new Netflix series Wednesday, based around the character Wednesday Addams. The show follows the classic Burton style, with edgy episodes and an eccentric script, so fans won't be disappointed. Although clearly part of his creation, Tim Burton's long list of prior characters each has their individual quirks and traits, setting them apart from each other but allowing them to fall into the different MBTI® categories.

BEETLEJUICE (BEETLEJUICE) - ESTP

Like other people with this personality type, Beetlejuice is a character who needs constant stimulation, or else he'll go crazy. He loves to pull elaborate pranks on people and he often has little regard for others' feelings.

While a handful of people with this personality are kind and considerate with a knack for adventure, some people with this personality type use their energetic spirit for the worst rather than the best. With as much liveliness as Beetlejuice has, it's better to put that energy towards a good cause rather than using it to break down the spirits of others. Having said that, all that energy makes Beetlejuice a brilliant Tim Burton movie to see on stage.

LYDIA DEETZ (BEETLEJUICE) - INFP

Lydia Deetz from Beetlejuice is undoubtedly INFP. She is artistic, imaginative, and has a strict moral code. If anyone hurts or offends the people she cares about most, she will defend them until her last breath. She is quiet, friendly, and extremely creative.

Artistic talent runs in her blood which is why she is so good at photography. Like most people with this personality type, they are often a solid mix of gothic and sweet with a heart of gold to top it all off.

KIM BOGGS (EDWARD SCISSORHANDS) - ISFP

Kim stands in awe at her house while spending time with Edward in Edward Scissorhands

Kim Boggs is a kindhearted character played by the one and only Winona Ryder, like Lydia Deets in Beetlejuice. She is generous, friendly, and can dress to kill.

While Kim has no problem blending into the popular crowd, her character also has an artsy, deep side which is why she is so drawn to Edward in the first place. ISFPs are creative, giving individuals and Kim best embodies this type.

PEGG BOGGS (EDWARD SCISSORHANDS) - ESFJ

Pegg plays Kim's mother in Edward Scissorhands (a Tim Burton movie with some of the best songs,) and she seems to embody the ESFJ personality type to a tee. Her character is considerate, warm, and incredibly friendly. ESFJs are traditionalists who like to ensure people's comfort as much as they possibly can.

This is why Pegg brings Edward into her home and takes care of him. It's the ultimate ESFJ move.

EDWARD SCISSORHANDS (EDWARD SCISSORHANDS) - INFP

There are plenty of characters with the INFP personality type throughout Tim Burton's filmography, most likely due to the fact that Burton is an INFP himself. He very much relates to this personality type which embodies the quirky misfit persona who always wants to do the right thing.

Burton often inserts his own personality into his protagonists, and this is what he does with Johnny Depp's iconic character, Edward Scissorhands. It helps that Depp himself is considered to be an INFP as well.

JACK SKELLINGTON (THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS) - ENTP

Jack Skellington holding a snowflake in The Nightmare Before Christmas

A The Nightmare Before Christmas, has Jack Skellington who is a great example of an ENTP in fiction. He is outgoing, confident, and invites change into his life at all costs. ENTPs are easily bored, and they can grow sick and tired when they are forced to abide by a routine.

This is why Jack becomes so tired of doing the same old thing when it comes to Halloween. Being the classic "debater" personality type that he is, he argues that their town would be better off if they embodied Christmas instead, which really embodies the ENTP outlook.

SALLY (THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS) - INFJ

Jack Sally Planning A Nightmare Before Christmas

Sally from The Nightmare Before Christmas seems to embody the INFJ personality type. Her character is warm, giving, and knows exactly what she wants.

Her quiet, calming nature is able to contrast well with Jack Skellington's outgoing and spontaneous persona. Like most INFJs, Sally is always willing to offer advice in order to serve the greater good of any given circumstance.

EMILY (CORPSE BRIDE) - ENFJ

Emily the Corpse Bride smiles in the moonlight.

As Corpse Bride, Emily is a great example of the "protagonist" personality type. She exudes ion and is charming as well as outgoing. It is easy for Emily to open up to others and she loves to make people feel comfortable.

Most ENFJs are selfless and will place the happiness of others before their own. This is what Emily ends up doing at the end of the film when she sacrifices herself for the sake of true love.

VICTORIA (CORPSE BRIDE) - ISFJ

Victoria from Corspe Bride

Victoria from Corpse Bride is the perfect young woman in the eyes of The Victorian Era of which the film takes place. Unlike Emily, Victoria is conventional, traditional, and proper. She is dutiful and chooses to play it safe by the rule book provided by her stuffy parents.

For example, she never learned to play piano because it is considered to be too ionate, and proper women, according to the era's standards, shouldn't exude such a thing. She is warm, friendly, and instantly connects with Johnny Depp's character. Victoria is a classic ISFJ.

ALICE (ALICE IN WONDERLAND) - INTP

Alice from Live Action Alice In Wonderland

In Burton's whimsical adaptation of the classic Lewis Carroll novel, Alice is the perfect example of an INTP character. This personality type is lead by curiosity, and it often ends up getting them into trouble along the way. She goes looking for things that she ought not to go looking for, which is how she ends up in wonderland in the first place.

She even says "curiosity often leads to trouble," which turns out to be true. Alice's thoughtful personality and detachment from reality makes it clear she is most compatible with this MBTI® type.
