Warning: contains spoilers for Ms. Marvel: The New Mutant #1
Iman Vellani, the iconic young actress who portrayed Kamala Khan in Disney+'s Ms. Marvel series, has become the creative force behind the character. The writer of Marvel's newly launched book about Khan, Ms. Marvel: The New Mutant #1, Vellani recently revealed that the opening sequence for the exciting new series came to her in a dream.
After Ms. Marvel's tragic, and controversial death in Amazing Spider-Man, the beloved young hero returned to the world of the living as the newest member of the X-Men at this year's Hellfire Gala, right before Orchis attacked the party and turned the mutants of Krakoa into public enemy number one.
Iman Vellani, a dedicated Marvel and X-Men fan, was recently revealed to be the co-writer of the new Ms. Marvel: The New Mutant series - alongside writer Sabir Pirzada - and in a new interview shared by Marvel, Iman reveals that much of her new story for Kamala came to her in a dream.
Ms. Marvel's Transition To The X-Men Begins With A Dream
Specifically, Iman Vellani shared that the entire concept for the comic came to her in a dream, also inspired by Billy Joel's song "The River of Dreams," which led her to make dreaming a major part of Kamala's journey. Ms. Marvel: The New Mutant opens with Kamala experiencing a recurring dream, more a stress nightmare, which confronts the young hero with her rebirth on Krakoa and her past connections to various superhero teams. Ms. Marvel has always felt pulled in different directions, between her family, friends, and duties, and between the different teams she has worked with like the Champions, Avengers, Inhumans, and now the X-Men.
Iman Vellani Captures Kamala Khan's Voice Perfectly
Ms. Marvel: The New Mutant #1 is an impressive writing debut for Vellani. It also perfectly introduces Kamala Khan into the X-Men's world. Many fans were upset with Marvel killing off Kamala, just to bring her back as a mutant, but her new X-Men era is already proving to be iconic. The young hero came out as a mutant to her best friend Bruno, and infiltrates an Orchis summer camp to fight back against them. Iman Vellani seems to perfectly capture Kamala's internal dialogue, highlighting how she engages with her history, heroism, and relationships, turning Ms. Marvel's mutant rebranding in a journey filled with grace, honesty, and respect.
In the first issue, Kamala's stress dream, which she has had nightly for weeks, ends with her witnessing a strange cosmic being, seemingly an amalgam of Doctor Strange and the Silver Surfer – hinting that there are forces at play in her new mutant journey that have yet to be revealed. Ms. Marvel has always been a dreamer, and Iman Vellani played Kamala as a huge dreamer of the future in the MCU show Ms. Marvel, so it is no surprise that she was inspired to integrate dreaming – both literal and figurative – into her ideas for the new series.
Iman Vellani is the first major MCU actor to be given a writers credit on a Marvel comic, and her co-writer Sabir Pirzada makes sure in the interview to credit the talented young actress with thinking of many of the major visuals throughout the first issue of Ms. Marvel: The New Mutant, showing just how involved Iman really was. Iman Vellani's dream of Kamala Khan's first adventure as an official X-Man has beautifully come to fruition, transforming Ms. Marvel's ambitious new stage as a mutant radical into one that will greatly impact her future while relying on lessons from her past.
