Although the Kang the Conqueror in one of the most popular storylines from Marvel Comics: Secret Wars. The MCU’s Phase 4 is introducing new characters, continuing the stories of already established ones, and exploring new events and concepts, and the main one so far is the multiverse.

The MCU started to explore the multiverse in Sony Spider-Man Universe. The events of Loki will be key in Phase 4 thanks to the introduction of variants and the creation of alternate timelines after Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino) killed He Who Remains (Jonathan Majors), making way for not only multiversal chaos but also the arrival of Kang the Conqueror, a variant of He Who Remains.

At the end of Loki, Sylvie sent Loki back to the Time Variance Authority’s (TVA) headquarters while she got rid of He Who Remains, and when Loki tried to warn Mobius (Owen Wilson), he didn’t recognize him as he was already in a new timeline, one where the one overseeing the TVA is Kang the Conqueror. The multiverse’s chaos will continue and Kang will return in main antagonist of the MCU’s Phase 5?

Marvel Comics’ Secret Wars Explained

Marvel's Secret Wars

Marvel Comics has seen two Secret Wars events, which share the same premise but the stories were developed differently. The first one was published from May 1984 to April 1985 and was written by Jim Shooter with art by Mike Zeck and Bob Layton. In it, the Beyonder observes the mainstream Marvel universe and becomes fascinated by the presence of superheroes on Earth and their potential, so he chooses a group of heroes and villains and teleports them against their will to Battleworld. This is a planet created by the Beyonder in a distant galaxy and stocked with alien weapons and technology, and he sends these characters there in order to pit them against each other, with the promise that those who slay their enemies will get what they desire.

The second Secret Wars storyline was released in 2015 and was written by Jonathan Hickman with art by Esad Ribić, and it had a more complicated storyline than the first one. This one saw the destruction of the Marvel Universe and various alternate universes, with each one’s respective Earth merging and creating Battleworld. This planet was divided into different territories where a “pocket universe” made of a specific storyline or universe resides – for example, there were the Deadlands (containing Marvel Zombies), New Xandar (Annihilation Wave), and Perfection (Ultron Sentinels). This Battleworld was created by Doctor Doom after he and Doctor Strange went to the Beyonders to stop the incursion of their reality and save the multiverse, with Doom taking the Beyonders’ power and incorporating the remnants of the realities destroyed by the incursions to create Battleworld.

Secret Wars Could Be The MCU’s Solution To The Multiverse

Variants of Marvel characters fight each other in Secret Wars comic.

The multiverse gets more and more out of control with each new story, especially after the chaotic events of Spider-Man: No Way Home. Although Doctor Strange closed the gates to the multiverse at the end, his actions will have major consequences on the multiverse, unleashing new dangers and further threatening to destroy the already fragile fabric of space and time. The MCU already has various timelines and universes and risks getting more confusing, so the solution to this could be adapting Secret Wars and bringing all these universes together in one world. This, of course, would also cause a lot of chaos and conflict in the MCU, more so if instead of the Beyonder, the MCU has Kang the Conqueror as the puppet master of Battleworld – after all, he’s already leading the TVA.

Theory: Kang Will Replace The Beyonder In The MCU’s Secret Wars

The theory (shared by The Beyonder is a cosmic entity and member of the ancient, otherwordly race known as the Beyonders. He’s an infinite-dimensional entity once considered the most powerful being in the Marvel Comics multiverse, and he took human form to better understand human beings. The Beyonder has the ability to manipulate reality, has vast psionic abilities (which allow him to scan the minds of the entire world, neutralize psychic probes from telepaths, and erase memories about himself), can change states of matter, and has superhuman strength.

As powerful and interesting as the Beyonder is, and as IGN points out, Kang is already a big presence in the MCU and he hasn’t even been formally introduced yet, so it doesn’t make sense to just have him as the villain in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and he must be on his way to set up something a lot bigger. The MCU’s Kang could take the Beyonder’s place in this universe’s version of Secret Wars, and even though he hasn’t actually been introduced yet, just the fact that he’s now the one in charge of the TVA gives him enough strength and resources to decide to merge all these different timelines and universes unleashed by MCU characters into one world. Now, a world with variants of a number of characters, dangerous settings, and more will make way for one of the biggest conflicts the MCU has seen, but in the end, the threat to defeat will be Kang, the creator of this new world and the overseer of it whose goal was to conquer other realities.

Kang As Secret Wars’ Villain Confirms Him As The New Thanos

Thanos he who remains Kang the conqueror Loki

One of the many questions about the future of the MCU is who will be this universe’s new Thanos, in the sense of a villain present across different stories and their actions leading up to a major event. Kang could be on his way to take the spot left by Thanos by being the mind behind the MCU’s Secret Wars and Battleworld, and just as Thanos wanted to bring balance to the universe by wiping out half of life in it, Kang’s motivation would be conquering other realities by bringing them together. Like Thanos, Kang would be leading the MCU towards a big event in Phase 5 with the adaptation of Secret Wars, and he will surely be an even more difficult threat to defeat than the Mad Titan. The MCU’s Phase 5 already has the basis for Secret Wars thanks to the events in Phase 4 so far, and with Kang the Conqueror teased to be a key presence, he could be on his way to lead this storyline.
