The Disney+ show Fantastic Four, and it may throw audiences for a loop. The show will focus on Skrulls, an alien race that has the ability to shape-shift into other creatures, and how they are using that ability to infiltrate Earth. As seen in Spider-Man: Far From Home two Skrulls impersonated Nick Fury and Maria Hill for the majority of the movie, though it was revealed that Nick Fury was in on it, so there was no malicious intent.
The Fantastic Four reboot that Marvel is attempting to pull off has been highly anticipated by audiences. While it was originally scheduled for a 2024 release, the MCU movie will release in February 2025 instead. This provides a perfect gateway for Marvel's Secret Invasion to set up the movie's (unexpected) villain well in advance of the release.
Secret Invasion Will Likely Introduce Super-Skrulls
With reports that Doctor Doom will not be returning as the villain in Fantastic Four, many are wondering who the antagonist of the film will be. Secret Invasion could be the perfect set-up to introduce another kind of Skrull known as Super-Skrulls. These Skurlls can not only shape-shift into anyone but also copy the superpowers from various individuals. They can even gain multiple powers at one time depending on whose powers they attempt to copy onto themselves.
In the Fantastic Four comics Kl’Rt, a Super-Skrull, is a villain who copies all the superpowers that the Fantastic Four hold between themselves. Since he is able to use all four powers at once, he is a formidable foe and able to hide easily since he can transform himself into anyone. Whether Kl’Rt appears in Secret Invasion is unknown, but it is likely that the show will introduce the concept of Super-Skrulls so if he does make an appearance in Fantastic Four audiences will know what kind of Skrull he is.
Super-Skrull Kl’Rt Makes More Sense For Marvel's Fantastic Four Than Doctor Doom
One of the biggest criticisms of prior adaptations has been the poor portrayal of Doom. Rather than try to live up to audiences' expectations, Marvel is smart by switching directions and bringing in a new villain such as Kl’Rt. The Skrulls have been a long-lasting storyline within the MCU and incorporating them further into Fantastic Four will certainly help set the movie up for success. The biggest way they are doing this is by not bringing back Doctor Doom.
Fantastic Four, despite its comic book popularity, has been one of the hardest stories for studios to nail down on the big screen. Having been rebooted many times, none of the adaptations have been well received, leaving audiences and fans of the super-powered group frustrated. As Marvel attempts to give it one last shot, they appear to be taking in a different direction to give it a breath of fresh air that will distinguish it from other Fantastic Four projects that have flopped and Secret Invasion could help them with that.
