Warning: Contains spoilers for Annihilation 2099 #2!

The MCU features impressive and memorable ships for Star-Lord and the Guardians of the Galaxy. However, Annihilation 2099 #2 has brought back a version of the hero's original ship that hasn't made it to the big screen. The Star-Lord of the future has a ship that throws back to the original Star-Lord's older adventures with a sentient vessel.

Annihilation 2099 #2 has the creative team of Steve Orlando, Dale Eaglesham, José Luís, Oren Junior, Raul Angulo, Arif Prianto, and Cory Petit. The series has been following and introducing independent tragic heroes as it leads up to an all-new cosmic vision of Marvel's Annihilation event, now set in 2099.

With Dracula an impending threat, Marvel is blending classic characters with futuristic twists and challenges. This blend has included Amandla Estrellas, a new Star-Lord with connections to Wakanda, with a vintage-inspired ship.

Marvel's Annihilation 2099 Star-Lord Features a Perfect Throwback

Marvel Revisits Annihilation: Conquest with Debut of Star-Lord's New Sentient Ship

Star-Lord's sentient ship, Umbingeleli, speaks to the hero while flying through space on a mission.

Amandla Estrellas is assisted by Umbingeleli, her sentient ship, who is seen accommodating her bio-necessities and completing dangerous missions. This is particularly important during her fight against Quasar in Annihilation 2099 #2. Whereas in some films where a computer system is incorporated as a pilot and control system, this comic's system and ship serve as one complete being with its own collective name. As a result, Umbingeleli feels like a character of its own as a partner to 2099's Star-Lord.

Bringing back a sentient ship for the 2099 Star-Lord in the new Annihilation 2099 saga is the perfect throwback to the original Annihilation series.

This return of a sentient ship is a perfect throwback to Star-Lord's former vessel, which simply had the name "Ship." It made its debut - and met its demise - in Annihilation: Conquest - Starlord #1 from 2007. The issue has the creative team of Keith Giffen, Timothy Green II, Victor Olazaba, Nathan Fairbairn, and Rus Wooton. The debut and rapid exit of Ship from Marvel Comics is one of the biggest missed opportunities for Star-Lord. In the MCU, the Milano, Benatar, and Bowie are core aspects of the team's identity; a sentient ship would have matched Peter Quill's love of series like Knight Rider.

Bringing back a sentient ship for the 2099 Star-Lord in the new Annihilation 2099 saga is the perfect throwback to the original Annihilation series. As the latest Annihilation-inspired series, after 2021's The Last Annihilation line-up, 2099 could provide one of the best multiverse opportunities in recent years. The cosmic scale of these events has allowed for the return of the Guardians of the Galaxy and allowed the galactic adventures of the Marvel universe to be at the forefront instead of the background. This new take on Star-Lord, and the debut of Umbingeleli, could be a truly incredible galactic refresh.
