With Chris Hemsworth recently implied that it may be his last MCU movie as Thor. If so, Thor could embark on his final mission with Valkyrie, Jane Foster, and Korg before officially retiring.
With a long history of battling everyone from his brother Loki, the Dark Elves, Ultron, Thanos, and now Gorr the God Butcher, it’s best to be up to speed with Thor’s adventures in the series. Since the MCU has so many different stories, separating Thor’s arc from the rest brings a complete timeline that fans need to be aware of before checking out Love and Thunder.
Thor (2011)
The movie that introduced Thor established him as the Crown Prince of Asgard who had grown reckless and arrogant. Thor was banished to Earth by Odin to redeem himself, ultimately learning that his adoptive brother Loki had come up with a plan to usurp him as the King of Asgard.
Although he was still over 1000 years in age, this Thor was still young by Asgardian standards and needed to experience the lesson in humility he learned by being around Jane Foster on Earth. He returned to Asgard as the worthy wielder of Mjolnir, although Thor had to suffer separation from Jane and mourned his brother's supposed death - who actually faked it.
What If...? (2021)
This is technically not canonical to the Sacred Timeline Thor, but the What If…? version’s adventures were set around the time of the original film’s events. Thor was still the prince of Asgard but was so lazy and arrogant that he decided to have a huge party on Earth that disrupted the planet.
The What If…? Thor was later chosen by The Watcher to be part of the Guardians of the Multiverse to protect multiple realities, where fought off Ultron. Thor eventually reunited with his reality’s Jane Foster to bring fans a happy ending for this version.
The Avengers (2012)
In the Sacred Timeline, Thor became embroiled in the conflict on Earth started by his brother Loki, who was tasked with Thanos to retrieve the Mind Stone. Odin summoned dark magic to send Thor to Earth, where he ed the Avengers to battle the Chitauri.
It was in The Avengers that Thor started to relax around other empowered beings, becoming allies with the likes of Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow, Hulk/Bruce Banner, and Hawkeye. After defeating Loki, Thor took the Tesseract and his brother back to Asgard to face their father.
Thor: The Dark World (2013)
Many fans consider the Thor sequel Thor: The Dark World saw the hero battle the Dark Elves, which saw him go across the Nine Realms to beat the evil Malekith.
Thor released Loki to aid him in his quest, falling for Loki’s trickery to believe his brother had sacrificed himself. After coming to with his mother’s death at Malekith’s hands and defeating the villain, Thor decided to let go of his claim to the throne to return to Earth.
Avengers: Age Of Ultron (2015)
Thor became a permanent member of the Avengers to take down HYDRA’s threat before Tony Stark tampered with the Mind Stone to create Ultron. In addition to dealing with this villain's arrival, Thor began having visions of the Infinity Stones that Thanos was collecting.
Thor helped create the android Vision as a result of what he witnessed, before teaming up with the Avengers to save Sokovia from Ultron. Although his friends wanted him to stay, Thor decided to travel the cosmos in search of the Infinity Stones to stave off a greater threat than Ultron posed.
Doctor Strange (2016)
Set during the events of Thor: Ragnarok, this post-credits scene was fans’ first glimpse of the Norse God in over a year and after the Avengers' civil war conflict. He turned out to be on Earth seeking help from Doctor Strange to learn the whereabouts of his father.
Thor revealed he was with his brother Loki, as well, with the pair having traveled from Asgard for their mission. Thor’s interaction with the Sorcerer Supreme also brought him a close ally and arguably among the most powerful people on Earth.
Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
This entry brought the films, with the likes of Valkyrie, Hulk, Grandmaster, and Korg ing the roster. Thor: Ragnarok kicked things off with the hero abandoning his search for the Infinity Stones and coming across his evil sister who returned after their father’s death.
After escaping his banishment from Sakaar, Thor returned with his new allies to fight for Asgard, although Hela proved too powerful. Thor decided to cause Ragnarok to save the citizens, thereby destroying Asgard and Hela on it. This then left Thor as the king of the refugee Asgardians heading to Earth.
Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
The Asgardians were attacked by Thanos and the Black Order, with the Mad Titan killing half of its survivors. Thor sought vengeance for Loki and Heimdall's death, teaming with Guardians Rocket and Groot to create Stormbreaker, which allowed him to travel to Wakanda to face Thanos’ forces.
Thor was successful in defeating Thanos with his new weapon but decided to inflict pain on Thanos instead of killing him with a headshot. Thor’s bloodlust backfired when Thanos completed the Snap to eviscerate half of all life, leaving the God of Thunder guilt-ridden for his failure to prevent this calamity.
Avengers: Endgame (2019)
This film is where the Avengers: Endgame saw the titular team completing the Time Heist to reverse the Snap's effects. Thor suffered from a five-year depression, seeing the Time Heist as his way to redeem himself.
Although Thor and his allies successfully stopped an alternate Thanos from destroying all life, he had to suffer the losses of Natasha Romanoff and Tony Stark. Thor decided to vacate his position as King of Asgard and headed into space with the Guardians of the Galaxy to find his true purpose.
Thor: Love And Thunder (2022)
Guaranteed to add to the movies, his fourth solo film is going to bring far more funny material into the mix. Thor: Love and Thunder starts off with the titular protagonist still traveling with the Guardians until he decides to look for peace instead of conflict.
Thor’s separation from the Guardians only brings him a fresh new battle as Gorr the God Butcher seeks to kill all Gods out of a personal vendetta. Thor is reunited with Jane and Valkyrie to stop Gorr’s threat along with finally learning what he truly desires in life.
