MediaTek has unveiled its new Dimensity 1080 mobile SoC for mid-range Android Dimensity 1050 as its first mobile SoC with mmWave 5G . mmWave was earlier restricted to high-end phones as it was only found in chipsets like the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. Even MediaTek's flagship Dimensity 9000 does not the feature. Alongside Qualcomm and Apple, MediaTek is one of the largest mobile chipmakers in the world. However, the company's processors are primarily restricted to entry-level and mid-range devices, which don't always receive the attention it deserves.

Despite its low-key image, MediaTek has taken giant strides over the past decade to become a serious competitor to Qualcomm. Recent data from IDC suggests that MediaTek has already sured Qualcomm to become the largest processor vendor for Android smartphones in the U.S. MediaTek processors can be found in a host of mid-range and entry-level Android smartphones, and they're especially popular in China. In the U.S., some of the most notable MediaTek-powered devices include the Galaxy A12 and the Galaxy A32 from Samsung. Other notable MediaTek devices globally include the OnePlus 10R and the OnePlus Nord 2T.

The Dimensity 1080 is fabricated on TSMC's N6 6nm process node and, according to MediaTek's press release, offers several key improvements over the Dimensity 920, including better performance and improved efficiency. It also has a new Image Signal Processor (ISP) that s up to 200MP image sensors.

Regarding tech specs, the Dimensity 1080 comes with an octa-core U, with two ARM Cortex-A78 cores clocked at up to 2.6GHz and six ARM Cortex-A55 cores clocked at up to 2GHz. It also has the Mali G68 GPU, but its exact clock speeds and other details have not been revealed. The new chip also s LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 storage. Overall, the specs suggest that the new chip is mainly similar to the Dimensity 920, with the most notable differences being a slight bump in the U clock speeds and for the 200MP image sensor.

MediaTek seemingly confirms that assertion and its that the Dimensity 1080 shares some of the same hardware and software as the Dimensity 920. However, the company puts a positive spin on it, saying it will help Android OEMs cut down on the time required to launch smartphones powered by the new chipset. As such, the company says new devices running the Dimensity 1080 will be available for purchase before the end of this year.
