Mephisto is finally coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe thanks to Sacha Baron Cohen is playing Mephisto in Ironheart, meaning he will officially the MCU during Phase 5.
The likelihood of Mephisto ing the MCU in Ironheart proves that Marvel's plans for the character are very different from the theories. He was expected to appear in WandaVision to help create Scarlet Witch's kids or steal their souls. There were even theories that Mephisto would be in Loki could include the villain. Instead of having Mephisto in a supernatural/multiverse project, Marvel's plans to include him in Ironheart show how unexpected his MCU role will be.
Why Marvel Is Introducing Mephisto In Ironheart
Mephisto appearing in Ironheart might not make much sense to some at first glance. The Disney+ show is about Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne), a brilliant young woman who creates an Iron Man-like Ironheart armor. The Iron Man connections indicate that Ironheart should be built around technology and have a relatively grounded story. However, Marvel confirmed that the show would include some more mystical elements. Ironheart's villain is The Hood (Anthony Ramos), a master criminal powered by a magical cloak from Dormammu in the comics. It would appear that The Hood's involvement will open the door for Mephisto to be in Ironheart.
Even though The Hood and Mephisto are characters linked to the supernatural in the comics, they do not have much crossover. The new reports that Mephisto is in Ironheart suggest that this will not be the case for the MCU. It is possible that Mephisto is the one who empowers The Hood in the MCU. This would be a smart change for Marvel Studios since Doctor Strange. The real question is how big of a role Mephisto has in Ironheart, as Marvel could only include him for a single episode and leave audiences wanting more. But after all the theories, this could be strangely perfect.
Is Sacha Baron Cohen Good Casting For Mephisto?
Even Marvel's decision to cast Sacha Baron Cohen as Mephisto is unexpected. There have been plenty of fan casts for the demon character, but Sacha Baron Cohen was not someone often considered. However, he does fit the mold for what could be an amusing, charismatic, and twisted portrayal of Mephisto. That is why some hoped that Bruce Campbell or even Evan Peters were playing the villain in previous MCU projects. Sacha Baron Cohen is known for his hilarious, risky, and fully-committed transformations for the Borat movies. He also can be more serious, as seen in The Trial of the Chicago 7, so he certainly has the range to be a good Mephisto for the MCU.
Where Mephisto Could Return In The MCU After Ironheart
Now that it seems like Mephisto is finally coming to the MCU, it is expected that Ironheart would be the first of many appearances for Sacha Baron Cohen. Since the casting is still unofficial, Marvel has not clarified Mephisto's place in the Multiverse Saga. However, looking at the MCU Phase 5 slate reveals some potential answers. The most obvious place for Mephisto to return is in Agatha: Coven of Chaos. Marvel's original Phase 5 slate had Agatha Hakness' solo show coming out immediately after Ironheart, so a Mephisto link between the two projects makes sense. It would also be a chance for Marvel to pay off the hopes that Agatha and Mephisto would interact.
Looking more into the future, Sacha Baron Cohen's Mephisto could be an essential character for the MCU after Ironheart. It would not be a massive shock if he somehow played a role in Mahershala Ali's Avengers: Secret Wars also cannot be ruled out.
