In a recent interview with David Hayter, the legendary voice actor of Demons Souls remake, which is now considered to be the definitive way to play the game.
Aside from the original Metal Gear Solid’s reputation as one of the greatest stealth games of all time, another reason that fans are yearning for a remake is due to how far the series has come since. Graphical improvements are a given, but director Hideo Kojima also continuously improved upon the series’ gameplay mechanics, enemy AI, sound design, and overall concepts of how stealth gameplay should work. Culminating with Metal Gear Solid 5, each Metal Gear title feels unique from its peers and provides an unparalleled experience. When reminiscing on the outstanding gameplay mechanics of MGS5, many fans of the series found themselves wondering how much better the first game would have been if those same mechanics had been present.
In an interview on Dan Allen Gaming’s referred to a tweet from a recent (which the official Metal Gear Twitter handle interacted with) which mentioned that Metal Gear Solid 2’s Big Shell location would be receiving “visitors” next week. Hayter did not seem to know about the tweet but went on to discuss how a remake might work.
According to Hayter, if he were selected to reprise the role of Solid Snake–although it is difficult to imagine anyone else doing it–he would need to return to the studio to re-record his lines. This is because the sound card used in the original PlayStation is leagues below what today’s sound cards are capable of. As an example, Hayter mentioned that if people listen closely, they’d be able to hear traffic and room noise in the background of some of his original lines. He speculated that a remake would perhaps be able to use his lines from the GameCube remake, but even that audio quality would sound jarring coming out of today’s consoles.
It seems unimaginable that a remake on today’s consoles would do something as lazy as use audio from 23 years ago, though. This is especially true when discussing a remake of a game as iconic as Metal Gear Solid. This means that if a remake is coming, David Hayter would be among the first to find out. Of course, he could simply be playing coy in this interview, but there’s no way to be sure until an official announcement is made. It's worth keeping an eye on, though, because a remake of Metal Gear Solid on the PS5’s hardware could possibly redefine how stealth games are made for the next several years.
